' CENTRAL POINT, OREGON Our Appreciation to Commissioner Gates Central Point Pays an Important Part of County's Taxes Central Point, one of the gems that attach as pendants to the I'aeiflc Highway, a-concrete necklace encircling tins - west coast, steps into the picture tliis-weA to impress its . - convictions concerning a duplication of the highway. They will pojnt out: , Central Point for the 1927 assessment Is paying a special school tax of f 6,704.93; city tax, 1 1,064.12; county and state tax, S6J93.76, a grand total taxation of S24.til2.81. Again, in the contribution to tho county and state taxes amounting to SC.7U3.76, Central Pointers make up this sum with L',4u.9:i for tho Btate, S4.386.82 for the county. With regard to taxes paid to the general road fund, which fund is used in Jackson County for tho construction and maintenance of roads, Central Point pays S37.61, this year, according to the books of the assessor. But Central Point has never been made the recipient of any refunds or this road money directly, though the provision was in tho past that up to 1925 a 70 per cent of the payment re verted to Central Point, after 1925 a 50 per cent. Ask Mayor Leever about this. He will agree with the state ment (list no refunds have been passed back to the tax payers of his city, as originally provided should be done. IN8IST ON ONE HIGHWAY With Central Point paying a rather appreciable amount of the taxeB and doing its share these many years for the big highway, is It any wonder they now insist their Pacific Highway Investment shall be carrying the traffic to and through their community? The proposed second highway proposition would divert much of the traffic no doubt to a route passing more than 3-4 In mile outside and north and wost of Central Point. In resistance to the nt least partial nullification of the voter decision to tax and build the Pacific Highway with Jackson county money, and tho threat to a confiscation of the Central Point property value's In a degree, these city officials express appreciation for the negative attitudo taken by Highway Commissioner C. E. Gates: W. C. LKKVKR. mayor; L. HATFIELD, rcaorder; It. H. PAXSON. treasurer; J. M. CUMMINOS, mar thai; M. M. KINDLK, fire chlof. COUNCILMEX: R A. Southwell, pres.; I. D. Lew Is, K. E. Scott, Floyd Iloss, M, M. Kindle, n. F. Jones. Others of Central Point attesting thoir "thank yous" to Mr. dates aro practically the entire community, both with in and adjacent to the coriwrato limits of this little city. PAYING 85 PER CENT INTO MEDFORD Says 10. K. Ilrown of tho Damon Cafe: "I don't under stand why Medford is ii'iHnting such a thing, which will materially pffect business In Central Point. One high way is enough. Thou, consider that 85 per cent of our money going for supplies, goes directly to Medford. Do they want to scale down on this Income? Surely not. Tlmo will bring them into a more satisfactory state of mind as concerns the wolfnro of Central Point." Similar statements were made by the leading merchants in this interview. Mayor Leever was a'wiunty court official and handled much of the Pacific Highway construction work and ho has .little patience with this second htehway scheme. V. J. Freeman, for more thiin a third of a century a business man In Central Point, deplores this controversy and brands It a waste of tlmo anil money because not essential to the interests of the tourists and local traveling public. L. Hatfield, 20 years a merchant, adds his comments and in stilt opposition to thei proposed duplication of highways. Likewise Kenneth M. Heebe, chairman of tho school board, and his associate mombers. Hamilton A. Pankey, Law rence C. Grimes, Clyde; A. Holes. Postmaster Tex Is In the first ranks of local protectionists. Add another in the real estate firm of Ciamer and Sheley.'H. C. Faber's Cash Store (tho associates In business with Mr. Faher) and Mr. Faber Is continually extending bis business investments: Boss and Ross, two merchants who saw service and know how to fight for their rights: L. H. Koot, Heebe and Kindle. ' SOME POINTERS TO ENJOY- Central Point In its "Pointers'' year book for tho high school shows a graduating class or 21 for IK2S. They sug gest a comparison with Meuford high. Medford is ten times as largo as Central Point and on this basis Medford ' should have bad 210 in tho '28 class or twice tho number that actually graduated. Central Point profits hv the com parison and this pointer Is highly complimentary to the school Interests of Central Point. 'omenvof Central Point nro alert to the conservation of their city and in the list must be mentioned Mury A. Moe, druggist. 43 years In the local pharmacy, tho 23 years just past as owner.' Miss Meo will entertain you on the highway subject, by Tight of residence. There urn many thousands or dollars Invested ill prop erties and commercial enterprises on the highway affect ed by any movo mado to detract from tho valuations present and potential, und It is a safe surmise that tho state highway commission of which Hon. C. K. Gates of Meiirorri Is a member, will act slowly and ultimately to tho continued prosperity or the original blgbwuy people. Olio citizen or Central Point observes that Medford shoots aro 10 reet narrower than in his clly and traffic problems already perplex Mcdrord. even to a row minutes religious service in the evenln.-;s nt street Intersections. He asks "Why does Medford want moro congestion? Whv don't they move the Chamber or Commerce down where it belongs, on the highway where tho tourist can and will roglstor and take a tew minutes to Inspect tho products of Itogue River valley?"
