Idaho, went on the. stand today
and submitted a vast'nmnhor of
exhibits in an effort to prove that
Idaho was Ik-Iik; discriminated
against. The expert asked for rates
from Idaho that would place grain
in Seattle, Tacoma, Portland or in
Longview on an equal basis with
other grain.
Exhibits showing that on the dis
tance scale Idaho grower" were
paying a higher rate than growers
in other slates to tidewater worn
introduced by Newton. Ho demand
ed n general leveling of rates on
the distance scale. Asked whether
he favored the- 10 per cent differ
ential on grain shipped to Port
land, he declared:
"Idaho wants the Portland dif

"We are not interested in any

Yard detectives early this morning
nilfied two or the best known Lon
don night clubs, both owned by
Mrs. Kate Merrick, "queen of the
night clubs," and mother-in-law of
one peer and the prospective
mother-in-law of another.
The clubs raided were the Forty
Three club and the Manhattan,
largely patronized by fashionable
people and known to many Amer
ican tourists.
The procedure at both clubs was
similar. A police inspector wear
ing evening dress wuh granted ad
mission on the presumption that
he was a guest. When the door
was opened a squad of detectives
followed him In and took posses
sion. The names nnd addresses of
those present were taken but no
body was arrested. Mrs. Merrick
was questioned at the Manhattan
club after which both clubs were
closed. The grounds for the police
action were nut divulged.
The Silver Slipper club, which
wits raided and closed Bovcrnl
weeks ago, nnd the two raided to
day were the last clubs operated
by Mrs. Merrick in London.
