The Rockefeller Institute of Med
ical Research, with which ho had
been connected since Its founda
tion In 1004, has been advised that
he died at Accra, on the pestilen
tial flohl Coast of Africa, a victim
of the fever whose cause he had
Just Identified by studying bis own
case. ,
Dr. NoguchlH who was fil yearn
old, undertook the expedition for
the Rockefeller foundation, to
which ho had been loaned by the
Institute, last November. At Accra,,
one of the unboulthiest spots on the
globe, he set up his microscopes to
discover, If possible, the relation
between the African and the South
American yellow fever.
Ten days ago his friends here
received letters saying he had won
his right nnd had identified the
cause of the fever ns an Indirect
result of his own Illness which had
confined him to a hospital from
December 2S to January fl.
While ill he Innnctitated n mon
key with some of his own Infected
blood. R contracted the disease
and died. Additional experimenta
tion definitely linked the fevers nf
the two continents and be Hft to
work to find n vaccine which would
counteract it. Associates will carry
on tho search, aided by his notes.

Impoverished Samurai family. Even
as a child, he was Intensely fond
of experimentation and as a result
of bis experiments lost several fin
gers of his left liand.-

sity of Pennsylvania fyr three

Carnegie Institution in Washington
before joining the Rockefellor In
stitute. In 19 IS he was chosen na n mem
ber of the yellow fever commis
sion sent to Kcuador by the Rocke
feller foundation and there suc
ceeded against tremendous diffi
culties in virtually exterminating
the disease.
Among his accomplishments were
the discovery of smallpox vaccine
free of bacteria, the discovery or
tho micro-organism responsible for
infantile paralysis, Isolation of tlio
causative germ of trachoma, the
dread eye disease; discovery of tho
kinship of syphilis and pa regis, n
muscular paralysis, am) Isolation of
the rabies germ with the develop
menl of treatment for Its use.
