THE NECESSITY OF THE illness of a juror in the C'liiine.v ense culls addition once more to the neeewtity of n provision in the Oregon Inw which would nuikc the selection of ulteruiile jurors in nil Mines of importance imperative. Everyone reiiiemhers how the cNpcnsc of the D'Autreiimnt ense was incroiiNcil hy the illness anil Milspiiciit ili'fith of a juror. Fortunately the illness of the Chancy juror is not serious and ciics at the beginning of the trial, hut it might well have conic at its close. A majority of the states provide for such emergencies j Ore gon should join the majority, at the earliest possible moment. Meuiiwhilc it would be well in the selection of all jurors to include the condition of health, among the first essential qualifications. SUPPORT THE MEDFORD AIR MAIL THE people of Medford as it whole do not seem to appreciate the real value of the air-mail port in this city; the service it gives, the prestige it involves, and the importance of it reten tion and further development. At any rate, the air-mail service is not used here as it should be used, and it is not growing as fast as it should grow. As this is air-mail week, the time seems opportune to urge everyone hereabouts to use more air-mail stamps, not as a mat ter of eivie self-interest entirely, although that factor is in volved hut because the value of this service can only be ap preeiated by the person who habitually uses it. Only last Wednesday a Medford woman received an air mail letter mailed from .Chicago on Monday, which gives an idea of the saving in time this service provides. Every business man knows how, when lie receives a stack of mail, he quickly picks out the air-mail first, because it attracts his eye, and he at once assumes it is deserving of his immediate atten tion. '.,? When the people realize that only eig"ht cents added to two cents for two ounces, gives this premium of value to their cor respondence, more general use of air-mail will follow as a matter of course. The solution of the problem appears to rest upon education. The people will use the air-mail more generally when they understand its many advantages more clearly. So look into the air-mail, lircthren. The more you under stand it the more you will like it, and the more you add to the volume of air-mail from this port, the better chance Medford will have of taking that leading part in air-mail and air-transportation development, to which its natural advantages en title it. WHAT ABOUT THE NEW YOKK TIMES, A Democratic newspaper, does not seem to agree with certain newspapers in Oregon that, under the stress of political excitement, maintain that Congress man Hawley is of no account, and his recent election as chair man of the. House Ways and Means Committee is an empty honor. - The Times runs portrait of Hawley and declares: Mr. Hawley Ih the flint mini from the Pacific Coast nntl tho Bficnnd from west of tlio Mississippi Itlver ovor to reach the chair ninnshlp, which ranks ttbovo nil olhor positions In tlio power of (ho House to Klvo lis nicinhnrs, except those of speaker and ma jority floor leader. When tho last tariff was enacted ho analyzed Its provisions and Kavo a historical account of tariff legislation by his party that brought him recognition as an expert. Ho has been through two tariff debates and la a firm advocate of the Republi can theory of protection. Jf these facts are not true, will someone kindly explain why a newspaper of the standing of the New York Times, opposed to tho party. The moviea may have their Influ ence In propagating certain Ideas, but the great educational value oil tlie cinema as heralded hy Mr.'v KdiHon and other prophets haHf failed to materialise. We still get. moat or our information or edge through the written and spoken word. A child would be unfortunate indeed If he had to de pend to any considerable degree upon picture, still or moving, for his education. However, both of these sugges tions are excellent. I should say. If there Is a law or ordinance pro hibiting open face coughing and sneezing In public places; It Is only one of thu many Jokes the health nut hoi-Mien play ; upon the public. Surh laws or ordinances do not particularly interest any business or commercial body nnd therefore tire not likely to lie enforced If en acted. Tho I'eprcHcntatlou of the usual mode of fufectlon by a sketch or cartoon on tho movie screen might help to enlighten some children, though I doubt whether this lesson would effect any reforms among adults who have yet to learn not to cough or sneeze with nose or mouth uncovered. Such persons require a more vigorous kind of instruction, And even if the en tire population became sufficiently intelligent and polite to cover all coughs and sneezes, we should still have plenty of sickness and dis ability from respiratory infections transmitted in the ordinary con versational mouih spray, which carries four or five feet far enough to catch most persons one talks with.
