For thin measure, coiitaiiiirip: the jiriee-fixing and e(iializn tion fee provisions, is not only ceonomieally unsound, hut if it should he passed would create a precedent, most dangerous and I demoralizing, in its eoiiseijiiences. For obviously if it is rijjht for the government to Kraut nwri eullure a subsidy, then it is ri(.'ht to grant any other business suffering from depression, a subsidy; and such a jioliey would simply reduce American business to the confusion of a mad house. The farm problem is a real problem.. The American farmer has not participated in the general prosperity this country has enjoyed, and conditions will not be satisfactory until he does participate. But granting him n subsidy will not cure his ills, any more than sserapinjf n victim's skin would cure a ease of smallpox. The trouble lies tleeper than in mere absence of profits; it lies in soiijo fundamental defect in our economic and industrial system. The proper way out is to determine the exciting causes of this condition mid then correct them, and this is a job not for the federal treasury, but for tin- best intelligence this country has, directed to n solution of this problem alone, and rein forced by scientific research, and the application of the most enlightened methods of business administration. There is no man in the country better qualified to head such a movement than Mr. Hoover, and while, during the ex citement and emotional fever of a presidential campaign, this fact probably cannot be "put over" with any success; the fact remains that the best way for the American farmer to pain the material prosperity and stability he desires and deserves, would be for him to support the leading candidate of the Republican party, instead of opposing him. AN HONEST RICH MAN flood for John 1). Rockefeller, ,r. Hy requesting the resig nation of Cciloncl I V. Stewart, as head of the Indiana Stand ard Oil, be has demonstrated that, with him at least, the virtue of honesty still has weight, and the cynical indifference of some big business men toward corruption and shady dealing arouses his resentment and indignation. Last February second under oath Colonel Stewart said: "I do not know nnylljInK about the iConllnentnl) minds." "I never had iinylliliiK to do with llm distribution of any bonds." "I don't know iinyllilni; about II." "I did not, porsonully, rocolvo any ol' tlieso bonds." On I ho socond of February tho trial or 1 lurry Sinclair for conspiracy was still pendlnit.
