I pick the doctor and leave It to him to pick nnd. choose hla Instruments or reinedtae. The quacks still have the cheek to apuoal to the unsophiatlcated prospect by dwelling on his fear of "the knife," Cancer quacks, rupture cure fakers, pile cure crooks and various other disrepu table charlatans have long plied their victims with this sort of twaddle. They presum upon the ignorance of the layman about the methods of modern surgery. ' It Is well for one who haa not learned' by personal experience of the expulslte gentleness of modern surgery, to know that most opera tions are done with little or no use of "the knife," that there Is no more than a spoonful or two or blood lost in most operations,, and that there Is just aa little or as much risk of complications in volved in a so called "bloodless" opera ion or surgical treatment of any kind as there is In the most radical operation. The quacks who purport to treat or cure cancer, plies, rupture, bow legs, cross-eyes or club-feet "with out operation" are a dangerous gentry for any sensible person to deal with. Their "painless", meth ods are never more painless than the methods employed by reputable physicians or surgeons, and too often tio "painless" or "bloodless" handling of the victim Is subjected to proves much more painful and Injurious than any proper surgical treatment la likely to be. The destruction or "removal" of ft-arts. moles, skin cancer, by means of caustics, or by electric Instru ments, or by the injection of one or ano'her chemical, is as truly "surgical" as is the destruction or removal, of the same lesion by knife, currette or other implement. In the treatment of piles, iii many cases th epaMent nee.d not bo detained from business by the treatment, nor suffer any grea discomfort. This is not the place to discuss tho various, methods of treatment available to, the modern physician, further thun to say that till known methods which are cur ative are surgical in character, and the wise patient will therefore en trust the matter of treatment only to tho hands of a reputable phy-, slcinn and surgeon. It is high time that intelligent folk should discard the foolish no tion that surgery means only cut ting. 14 Ql'KSTIOXS AND ANSWKHS 1 John Hancock. Correspondents sometimes mis understand the rules. Most people wish to be fair, but because there - are necessarily so many facts that bear upon the pres ent "Chaney case" that are entirely unknown to the average voter, It is almost Impossible for a large majority of tho voters to form an unbiased opinion simply because they are uninformed concerning different angles of the case. The average citizen knows very little about "under-cover men" and the various ways and intrigues that our county officers are forced to resort to in order to enforce the prohibition law. , Money must be paidnit in rounfl about ways and seemingly not ac counted for in order to "set a thief to catch a thief." . I contend the word of Wilkle, who it Is claimed has a' prison record, should not be given full credence. An officer handling some forty thousand dollars'- of prohibition funds during his term of office, aa has Mr. Chaney, 'would scarcely bo guilty of appropriating com paratively small sums to his own use. Were he dishonest he- would have taken much larger sums. This' fact will appeal to all reasonable people. In the DeAutrcmont case, which was a federal case and tried by U. S. District Attorney Geo. Neu ner, of course Mr., Ch.iey was only his assistant, but considering that Mr. Chanoy was tho man who secured tho confosslons from these criminals, after Hugh had bcn sentenced, and thereby saved the county, and taxpayers . some thou sands of. dollars for a second trial, he seems, to have been a fulrly able assistant. It Is Mr. Chaney's Job to secure evidence and this evidence often times costs money, that it; Is not always easy tp account for. The people should remember this. ' QNM!1 APRIL' 21.M928.
