Now when a man Is running for office, high or low, we after him go gunning with all the zeal we know. His platform is a flivver, refusing to divert the Colorado river to irrigate our dirt; he's wrong on prohibition and on the Income tax he heeds not the condition of toilers' jad ed backs. He stands for lower wages and empty dinner pails, for faster motor stages and larger county jails. We talk of vital Issues that face our care worn eyes, and do not deal in tissues of slanders and of lies. We do not scan the record of Jinx, the candidate, to prove that it Is checkered, that he's s scurvy skate. We claim not he's addicted to opium and booze, or that he was convicted of stealing someone's shoes. The things for which he's standing we roast. If they don't suit the nostrum he's outhanding we say aren't worth a hoot. We prove that fell dis aster will follow if he wins, wc show that he's a master of eco nomic sins.- But as a human be ing his virtues we admit, while we are all agreeing his platform doesn't fit. All gray beards can remember how people used to bray before the cool November brought on election day. Then in and out of season we charged the candidate with everything from treason to swiping barn yard gates. Their platforms mattered little, their policies or aims; .but men would sit and whittle and call them beastly names. Methinks we all are growing more decent, more po lite; we find no fun in throwing stale tomcats at a wight. The world is growing better, I claim. In prose and verse, although the chronic, fretter may say it's growing worse.
