"fMIE defeat "f Small-Thompson liiiii'liine in Illinois ponies A us a pleasant surprise. This successful for so many years that itself indefinitely. The Dcneeii victory, however, demonstrates that sooner or Inter every worm will turn, and, just as the craziest individual may have lucid intervals, so the most corrupt city in the United States may, with sufficient provocation, show that a spark of decency can be fanned into a flame. To stiifje a celebration now, however, would be somewhat premature. This election was only u primary. The Sinall- Thompson machine is nominally Republican, but in reality it is bi-partisan. Justice Floyd Thompson won the Democratic nomination for Governor, and his victory means Al Smith will have the Illinois delegation. It is a pretty safe prediction that before next fall there will be a close understanding between the Sinall Thompson forces and the backers of Al Smith. Thompson and Small would be quite content to have the Democrats carry Illinois for President if they could retain their control of t'ook county, for it is in local control, not Federal patronajfe, where the bi(j money lies. So while this primary result is gratifying to all people who believe in decent government, the political regeneration of Chi cago should not be proclaimed until the final election in No vember. Hig Hill said he "might resign" if Judge Swanson defeated State's Attorney Crowe. As we remarked at the time, this was only a bluff. l!ig Hills never resign. They only quit the pub lic trough when they are kicked out. The important question therefore becomes Will Thompson lose his control as the boss of Illinois, in the fall, and will he be relegated to private life at the next municipal election? A start lias been made in this direction. Hut it is far too early to celebrate its consummation. Upon a sloppy, beastly day tlie people utv no longer gay. they Ktand around and wail, and mutter many bitter things, fierce adjectives with red hot KtlngH, about the rotten sale. They say the groundhog should be lynched, the tfreatner bu reau should be pinched as beinsr but u fake; the public hang man should destroy the goose bones that the Heers employ when they predictions make. A man feels like a ghantly wreck when water's running down hi neck und rising in his shoes; and he looks round with anxious eyes for something- that he can despise, ex coriate, abuse. The elements don't care a hoot about his sulphurous salute, and so no harm is done; and he It as worked off all his spleen, when looking down, the clouds be tween, appears the good old Hun. Oh, it is true that now and then the kindest and tho best of men must have a chance to beef; they need a prop on which to lean when they nre feeling sore and mean, and there expound their grief. They do uot like to roast their wives or bring new sadness to the lives of friend along the street; and still they feel they need a vent for all their woe and discontent, they'd kick with both hind feet.
