PIERCE BACSS SO Ot'B former Democratic fiovernor favors Penntor Walsh for tlie Democratic- r-sic Int ial noiiiinution. The si-lection does liiin credit. Senator Wulsli is u pentiinp statesman, and, in our judg ment, one of t lie finest men in public life today. He is honest, capable, a genuine Liberal, a frc-nllcinan Ad a scholar. There is in fact, from the Democratic standpoint of practi cal politics, only one objection to him. He happens to be a Catholic. ! Religious freedom, the inalienable right of every citizen to j worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience,! is written in our fundamental law, as one of the imperishable corner-stones of our Republic. There was a time when Governor Pierce was accusd of re ligions bigotry, it even LoinR hinted that he had sentimental leanings toward the Ku Klux Klan, we are pleased to note that these accusations were unwarranted or if warranted at that time, they are unwarranted now. For, in supporting Senator Walsh, Mr. Pierce is very prop erly regard religion as qualifying or disqualifying, any man for public office. This is good Americanism and good sense. Senator Walsh is also an uncompromising Dry. So Oswald West's fears of those Pierce exhortationst before the W. 0. T. I". being wasted, and his tears for the dry cause being in vain, are not justified. With ex-Governor Pierce for Walsh, Os West for Ifeed, and most of the other prominent Democrats in this state for Al kiuitn, there promises to be plenty of action in the approaching! Democratic primaries. If Mr. Pierce's choice doesn't carry Oregon, he can at least have the satisfaction of saying the "BEST man" didn't win. ! QUILL POINTS i . Bankruptcy: A legal process that provides a 'hick town with its social leaders. It wis8 be cheaper to nominate Hoover. It won't .be neces sary to spend so' much explaining who he is. One thing Mint enables Mussolini to boss without arousing the ire of the proletariat is possession of a wife who has no so cial aspiration. Alas! If Mexico plans the confiscation of oil wells, it's a dirty trick to pull while America is busy with Nicaragua. Americanism: Scorning hokum; thinking a man a favorite son because lie says he is.
