ment of the coal strike," was taken at
a conference today between Governor

ness organizations In the Pennsyl
vania anthracite region, the governor
announced at the close of a meeting

disclosed.
I CRIME WAVE SHIFTS
TO TALENT AREA
HARRISBURO, Pa.. Dec. R. Gov
ernor Pinchot today resumed his ef
forts to end the suspension of opera
tions in the Pennsylvania anthracite
field, now in Its fifteenth week.
Today's move took the form of a
conference with businessmen. , They
were Invited here hy the governor to
discuss the situation. Although Mr.
Pinchot kept, pllent before the meet
ing us to the exact program he had
in mind, he said its purpose was "in
the interests of settling the strike
without an Increased cost of coal to
the public."
The governor made clear his inten
tion of sticking to the proposals
which he presented as a basis for
settlement on November 28 and
which were accepted hy the miners'
and rejected by the oberators.
-The, governor planned to meet the
delegation of businessmen about
noon in closed session.
Major V. Inglis, chairman of
the anthracite operators' wnge nego
tiating committee In a statement yes
terday said the operators had nothing
to conceal so far ns their books and
profits were concerned and that tho
operators were ready to resume wage
negotiations "on any reasonable
basis."

ing the use of the new bridge at that

ing that the Linn county court wanes
the old bridge removed and commis
slnoers declared they would not per
mit use of the old bridge.
The new bridge across tho Wil
lamette river at Hurrisburg Is expect
ed to be opened for travel this month.

The commission today accepted
the gift by the Shevlln-Illxon Lumber
company of Bend, of th seven or
eight acre tract that includes the fa
mous Lava river caves, this land be.
itig on the Dalles-California, highway
(Fremont trail) some fourteen miles
south of Bend. The hlg trees are left
standing on the tract, which will be
named Uiva River Caves Park and it
'will be made one of the chief resting
places along the highway from the
Dalles tn Klamath Falls.

Donegnn and Attorney J. V. Biggs,
all of Burns. Harney county, discuss
ed the Improvement of the road from
' Burns to Canyou City, 32 miles of
which are in Harney county. The
men from Burns want this made a
part of the federal forest service road
program. The entire road will cost
J2i;0,000. including surfacing. The
county hn $65,000 for co-operation. !
