necessary roughness. The locals were
penalized three times for offside.
The gnme was witnessed by 3500
people, and was pronounced as thrill
ing a battle, as any on a northwest
gridiron this season.
After the game, Kalem players
were loud In their praise of Con
rad's work and the shiftiness of tho
Medford backfleld.
The Medford team unstintedly gave
the credit for tho victory to Conch
Calllson, and said the Salem line
was a stonewall, with fast and pow-(

CHIEF WITNESS
The trial of H. McKlrpy, chnrged
with burglary at Ashland three weeks
ago, will begin in the circuit court
tilts nfternoon, and the chief witness
against tho defendant will be Uichard
Hunn, a 13-year-old Oakland, Calif.,
boy, whom he is alleged to have in
duced to eommfrt the burglaries. Mc
Elroy is about 27 years of age.
Richard ran away from home and
met McKIroy at San Jose. Calif., the
pair coming north according to the
boy'M story, finally reaching Ashland,
where they were arrested.
The little fellow is held In the wo
man's ward of the county Jail, and
acts as a trusty. .' He has become a
prime favorite with county workers
and juror., nnd Is a lively youngster,
sharp as a whip. After the trial. It is
planned to -nd him back to his home
In Oakland.
7 Children Asphyxiated.
LK.MOfJO, Westphalia, Germany,
jyeCt 7, (A. P.) Seven -children,
aged from ono to three, were found
asphyxiated in the children's hospital
today. Death was caused by coal gas.
A Jury In the circuit court Saturday,
returned u verdict of $282. 60 In favor
of tho Columbia Milling company of
Portland, In their suit against J. W.
Kistler, an Ashland baker, "for amount
due for shipments of flour in 11(23.
Kistler admitted owing $213 on a
flour shipment, but filed a counter
mi it asking for $(i!Hl, less the amount
conceded, or a net total of $477, for
failure to deliver a carload of flour.
Ho alleged that, before he asked for
delivery, the price of soft and hard
wheat flour rose, and that when he
nsked for delivery It was refused, and
that $6!t represented the increase in
value of tho flour.
The defendant was represented by
O. O. P.oggs and A. J. Flelgel, and the
milling company by Hiigs and
Hritfgs.
