Cream butter alone till it can be beaten with a spoon,
then add sugar gradually, beating mixture until
creamy. Separate eggs; beat yolks until thick, and
whites until stiff. Add beaten yolks to the creamed
butter and sugar; mix well, then add portion of the
flour. Stir (do not beat) until smooth, then fold in a
portion of the stiffly beaten egg whites. Continue to
fold in flour and egg whites alternately ; odd flu voting,
and pour into an ungrensed paper lined pan. Bake
In a very moderate oven (3i!5"F.)one hour for square
or round cake and longer If a deep bread pan is used.
Cool thoroughly before cutting. Keeps moist and
freih two weeks at least.

Secretary Jardine today announced his
approval of a national system of
roads selected by the Joint board on
inter-state highways to be known us
United States highways.
Tho road system includes 75,884
miles of highway, each route of which
has bene designated by number, and
the secretary's approval of the joint
board's plan has been forwurded to
the American' Association of State
Highway Officials, meeting in Detroit
this week.
The secretary's approval of the
board's highway plan brings to a close
wor kof tho 24 state and national
highway officials appoited last March
by Secretary Gore to draft a highway
plan. The board's report provides
for tho marking of the selected high
ways with standard direction and
warning signs.
In a letter to Thomas Tf. MncDon
ahl, chaiijnan of tho joint hoard, Sec
retary Jardine declared the adoption
of the board's proposals, will "accom
plish a marked advance in the .high
way system and building program of
the country ns a whole."
