AN AMAZING POLITICAL SITUATION ATHKMENDOUS mid ultniretlicr amazing clmnt-'t- kas tm over American politics the past few years, but the Ameri can people are so Iiiik.V (retting their nhare of the prevailing pros perity, that no one seems ti) notice it. . This change is apparent in a thousand directions, but perhaps i lie most effective demonstration is the ri(,'ht-abont-fa:e of the Hearst newspapers. , . Sir. Hearst, of course, isi Democrat, witli a capital D. He also is, or has been until very recently, the journalistic champion "f the dear common people, and the uncompromising foe of 13ig Business. For years mid years Mr. Hearst's editorial page was a rallying frround for box-car type, depicting the iniquities of Wall Street, with the Republican party usually represented by a corpulent gen- llcman, clothed largely in dollar signs, resting a heavy heel upon the neck of the poor working man. . But what n change has recently come over the spirit of .Ran dolph's drearlis! Big Business is no longer a corpulent, avaracious and an exceedingly vulgar looking fat-head. Big Business is rep resented by carefully sketched cartoons depicting such things ns harnessed water power, turning the wheels of productive. activity, and dropping fried chicken and silver dollars into the laborer's dinner pail. ; And scarcely a da goes by that Mr. Arthur Brisbane, Hearst's gifter leader writer, doesn't pen a panegyric for President Calvin (.'oolidge. In fact at tlm present moment, Mr. Hearst is undoubtedly the most effective Republican press agent in the country, not ex cepting the New York Tribune ami the Portland Oregonian. Every day he is malting more votes for fortune to destroy, than any other : And why? Simply because of lution noted above. For before all else .Mr. Hearst, is a demagogue. No one is more sensitive to changes in popular opinion, or more prompt to flop with them. " i Mr. Hearst was quick to realize when the old game of bailing Big Business was played out. He led in the discovery that the Bull Moose-Wilsrmian-Hcinoeracy era was over. i The American people are amazingly prosperous, they want above all else to continue so, and they arc almost unanimous in the belief that one of the best ways to do so is to keep President Coolidgc. in the AVhite House. So Mr. Hearst is all for the G. 0. P. and Calvin. And Miss Ida Tarbell who once flayed John D. and the Standard Oil and was a member of the executive committee of the Bull Moose party, has just completed rt handsome biography of Judge Gary, eulogizing the prosperous President of the Steel Trust and lauding' Big Business enterprise! ,. So very impressive is tho ap plication of an alleged antiseptic that even some people who profess to scorn the "germ theory" like to think , the average household and' you Vill that antiseptic precautions are being .admit that tho popular sport of trying taken in everything that ccuicerns'to poison germs after they have en their own welfare or safety. It Is a 1 sconced" themselves safely in tho tls nice comfortable feeling, that anti- Kues costs a pretty penny. septic precautions insure against bac terial Infection, nnd in order to derive the greatest degree of comfort from that feeling; It is necessary that one have an exceedingly sketchy know ledge of bacteriology, pay such bits of Information ns one receives from, oh, almost any tradesman whoso wares purport to ho "sanitary", or "hygien ic." and that includes nearly every line of oommorce these days. Take peroxide of hydrogen, to pot down to the popular plane. When it encounters blood pus (matter), erum or any organic tissue substance, there is a foaming which is quite spectacu lar. You see it work. You Of-suine it Is knocking tho germ snlley west. You feel gratified and assured that yqu have taken proper antiseptic pre cautions. Now T could not feel that way at all,., J might use the peroxide to help clean away dead tissue or some such purpose, but I should rather not expose n fresh or recent wound of any kind to peroxide, for I should fear tlie possibility of the ebullition or foaming driving infec tive material or septic germs more deeply Into the wound. I might take a chance stopping, bleeding from a razor cut by means of peroxide though not If tho cut were made by any other razor than my own. One of the most childish, and In ef fect the most dangerous, beliefs of the well misinformed -Jolty regarding an tiseptics is that ' tho application of medicaments whlf'h purport to be an tiseptic hastens tho healing process. The nostrum interests see to It. and have for manv years seen to it that the laity shall he kept well misin formed about that. Healing processes go on at a certain fixed rnte (the rate varies with different tissues) and al though unintelligent or bungling in terference will easily delay tho heal ing process in any case, there Is no known means of speeding it up. As a general rule the antiseptic ap plications the well misinformed lay man makes to his minor wounds or sores In the course of healing serve only to Interfere with the healing pro cess and so to delay healing heed lessly. J have said repeatedly that It Is Im possible for tho layman to grasp the moaning of asepsis, as impossible as It is for a nurse to practice surgical. medical or sanitary asepsis until sho has learned the technical difficulties of it and you have my opinion of the of asepsis by scientific and -practical i nostrums you mention. The prac tice of asepsis, surgical, medical or sanitary, really amounts to nothing else than making certain that no germs shall be carried to or from a given place. It must he obvious, then, that In order to make certain of that. the responsible Individual must have a pretty sound practical knowledge of the biology of microscopic organisms and of modes of infection. I said a moment ago that the lay man's faith In antiseptic medicaments Is not only foolish but in effect dan gerous. The danger lies not so much in the Jnjury-done by the antiseptics applied, but In the neglect of proper treatment wliWe waiting for the anti septic to do what no such agent can do. Used to have tho damned things myself before I broke my tooth brush. I believe they ure produced by slight abrasions of the mucous mem brane, as by the tooth brush, by bit ing, by burning. The best remedy I can suggest is a daily touching of each canker sore with a mixture of equal parts of tincture of iodin and glycerin. This smarts like sin momentarily, and then seems to relieve. A little sin will not be amiss where you are. Then one subject to canker sores should make liberal us of freshly prepared warm boric acid solution as a mouth wash, a dozen times a day, always before anil after eating, and no other medi caments. Every player has bis own pet theory and t!.e writer is no exception. In his opinion, a player should overbid part ner's no-trump under the following conditions: t (a) Having an original bid ,in either major suit; . (b) Any six or more cards in cither major suit; (c) Any two five card suits; (d) Any five card major suit if the hand contains a void suit, a singleton or no help for part- ' ner's no-trump. . -In any discussion as to the advisabil ity bf taking out partner's no-trump bid with a bid of two hearts or two spades, careful consideration should be given to what the no-trump bidder should do. That is, if the dealer bids one no-trump, second hand passes and the dealer's partner bids two hear,ts or spades, with vhat type of hand should the dealer bid two, no-trump or pass? Any theory of the take-out that you may adopt,. is incomplete without a thorough understanding between part ners as. to the procedure dealer should follow subsMiucnt to the take-out. I am of the opinion that if this procedure be- . comes , thoroughly understood, there will not be the various differences of opinion as to the take-out. W ith a part ner who understands what to do after a take-out, it is much easier to arrive at the best bid of the two hands. The purpose of the take-out, of course, is to ' bid a suit that offers a better chance for game than the no-trump. If, however, tiie original no-trump bidder slil.l con siders the no-trump offeraa a better chance for game, he should bid two no trump.
