OBITUARY
SMITH Andrew J. T. Smith,
known us Major Smith and a pioneer
resident of Gold 11111 passed uway
suddenly during; the early hours of
the morning of November i. The
causo was given by his attending
physician, Dr. Ohisholm, as mitral In
sufficiency (heart trouble). He had
been In poor health, but upon retir
ing the evening before was feeling
as well as usual. James liurns, who
had resided with him for many years,
was sleeping In an adjoining room,
but knew nothing of his passing until
morning.
Itnjor Smith was a veteran of the
Civil War and a member of the
Gold Hill post, O. A. It. He had
been a resident of Gold Hill for the
past 40 years and is well known in
Odd Fellow circles of southern Ore
gon, being a member in good .stand
ing of every branch of the order, nnd
his presence was always assured at
every function. Ho leaves no rela
tives, but a wide circle of friends,
nnd fluid lilll haB sustained a loss
long to bo remembered.

Sergeant Gro'cr Owen, in charge
of the local V. S. army recruiting
station, will leave Thursday for
Aberdeen, Wash., where he has been
transferred from this city, following
an uninterrupted duty of two nnd
one-half years. Sergeant Peter Albip
of Portland arrived yesterday with
his family to take charge of the local
station.
During his stay here Sergeant
Owen had made many friends who
will regret his leaving. The sergeant
has been 1 nthe nrmy for 15 years,
served two years in Siberia, five in
the Philippine Inlands, and has been
on duty in ull parts of the United
States. ,
The transfer to Aberdeen Is a form
of promotion in recognition of his
efficient Bcrvices here, he having en
listed, it Is said, several hundred
men.

leave." Sergeant Owen said this
morning, "but I'm coming back and
