MTSDFOIW ftfiOD TfiTBTJNT!, TEDFORD, OREGON FKTDAY, OCTOBER 5fl, KE3 TERS !L TU.0. BEAT BEARS ODGE BOO HOW NEAR K TELLS LEAGUE E TO VICTORY EUGENE. Ore., Oct. 23. All pep. peii up and with a new fighime spirit Instilled In their veins, the Univer sity of Oregon football men are ready today to embark for Port land where the University of Cali fornia's Oolden Bears will be faced tomorrow afternoon on Multnomah field. A week - ago, Oreeon fans were willing to admit that California would wallop Oregon, hands down. Today however, that situation has changed.' California Isn't going to win. the Oregon backers say. Fur ther than that they aver, Oregon is going to upset the dope and take the long end of the score. Others, liowovor, still shake their heads. ' Whatever the outcome will be. Oregon is putting Into the field a team composed of her strongest foot ball men. Captain Mauts will tie at right ond;'KornB at right tackle: Bailey, right guard; Johnson, cen ter: ShleldH, left guard; Sinclair, left pukle; Smith, left end; Anderson, quarter; Hogden, right half; Wetsel. I.Ml Illlli:' JUtirn, tuiiwun, ' It Is a heavy team, the line aver aging 180 or better, and the hack field Just os heavy. . I v Team play la all that . Oregon needs, the critics say. She has the material, . Dm in tne mano buuic she played ragged football.- Secret practice, however, Is sup posed to have Ironed out the lack of team lilay. Ilia lis why the Ore gon rooters ure ho pepped up. I.ust year, they point out. after getting oft to a bad start, the Oregon team beat Washington and surprised the whole coast. Why not California this year? they argue. WASHINGTON, Oct. S3. (A. P.) How republican leadnrs In the League of Nations fight escaped what they considered a trap to commit . theru 'beforehand to support of the coven ant is one Incident of the historic struggle disclosed for the first time by the late Henry Cabot Lodge, one of Its dominnnl figures, in a book written a month before his death and I given to the public today. Entitled "The Senate and The League of Nations," the volume, placed on sale by Scrlbner's as copy right holders, is in the main a record for posterity of tho already known history of the bitter-end struggle be tween Woodrow Wilson and the sen ate opposition. But the opposition lender Is outspoken In his personal characterizations of the war presi dent, upon whom he lays full respon sibility in his unbending attitude for the league's defeat. , ' Although he had worked and voted fur ratification of the league with reservations, in the end, Mr. Lodge says, he was thankful that it had been defenled. He views the league ns haying In practice thus far proved futile for the ostensible purpose of Us creation. . COMMUNICATIONS The Screen By To Press Agent. GLsti Sisters. Hunt's CraUrlan. "Romola.,' with the CHnh sisters and a notable supporting cast opened a two days engagement nt the Hunt's Craterian yesterday. : It was photOBiaphed for the most part in the wondrous locale of the nattntive itself; It Is magnificently costumed and played with admirable discretion and intelligence. Doubtless ull have noticed the very bright star whii.h now shows in the southwest in the early evening, the plant i Venus, the star of love, the brightest tar in the heaVeiiH. A little further to the east another bright star appears, a flow rival of Venus, the planet Jupiter. Some have doubtless noticed that Jupiter appears a little further west every evening, due to t he eart h's more rapid movement eastward. Venus is now coming around from behind the sun moving more rapidly than the earth and Iherrfor appturs a til L lu further ast eai evening. As oonseuaence Oiese two bright planets are rapldjLy ap proaching each other. This will con tinue until the L'6th of November, when the two stars will be in con Junction, that is,, a line drawn from the North Star would pass through them both. It is possible that they may pass so close together as to ap pear as a single star. On the 19th of November the new moop wilf pass Venus and on the 1'Oth will pass Jupiter. And It Is possible that the moon may pass between us and either planet shutting off their lights Altho the moon and planets wander only a few degrees north or south of the plune of the ecliptic yet how seldom do we see the moon pass before one of the planets! The writer. at the age of GG can remember of seeing It only once. It. makes an interesting guess each month, as the moon approaches one of the pin nets to attempt to tell whether it will go to the north or to the south, or pass directly in front; When the moon comes around again In December It will pass Jupiter first, on the 17th and pass Venus on the 18th, the order being reversed from the November position, these two bright stars and the moon so close together making a very brilliant display in that part of the heuvens. Terhaps some render Is sufficiently interested to ask. How do you know that? The answer Is simple, Just .by reading the almanac. However It takes, some study to bo able to read the symbols used to denote the vari ous planets and their positions. Jayne's is the one I use. They do not all give these facts. WM. M. CARLH.
