The truck, driven by a brother, Nelson Pursel, was enroute to Mod ford from Roseburg when a trump hailed for a ride. The man clam bered on tho Bide , and in an at tempt to push him off, in compli ance with the company's rules against giving strangers rides, as the truck was going at a slow speed. Purse! was fulled under the wheels while the trump made his escape. Before tho machine could be stopped tho rear wheels had passed over his body,- grinding ono ear into the dirt besides Causing the other Injuries mentioned. Mrs. Pursel is at the bedside of her Injured husband, who. it Is expected, will bo removed to his home in the city somo tirno next week. His brother, Nelson, returned to the city with the truck tho next day. PLEADS GUILTY TO TAKING BATTERY, GETS 40 DAYS On his plea of guilty to petty Ii eeny. Involving the theft of a storage battery from J. T. Davis. William Woods, a former truck driver was sentenced in Justice Roe's court Jacksonville yesterday to 40 days In the county jail. He was arrested yesterday morning by Chief of Police Adams and at that time denied any part in the theft. When tho missing property was found In tin outbuilding he admitted that he had stolen It. Woods was a former elployo of Davis, driving a truck used in the transfer business and was fa miliar with the locution of tho pro perty, it is said. According to tho district attorney's office, air. Davis Jias lost over $1000 worth of ; property within the pnat several years through petty thieving. Law enforcing officials expect that tho sentence given to Woods - will servo as un example to others.
