This companion in misery is none oihA than OU Man Mars. For while tho "Washington warriors were walking the plank fr the Pirate crew, ns tho rains from Heaven mixed with "Vhi4e House tears, the God of "War was suffering, an equally, painful reverse over in Locarno, Switzerland. And, one might add, equally unexpected. In fact, when the Locarno world series opened, wise and worldly men were backing Old Man .Mars as at 'least u three to one favorite. The dove of peace was scarcely given an outside chance to win. For there was the Treaty of Versaillies on one hand, which the Germans would never accept and the Allies would never relin quish, and there was the Poland corridor on the other, which France Mas expected to insist upon and which Germany was certain to oppose to the bitter and sanguinary end. It looked like a Martian slaughter, not on the dot,,-so to speak, but eventually. As in Pittsburg, however, .so at Locarno," the unexpected happened. The thing that had never happened before in all similar conferences since tlje war, suddenly hap pened there. It is, of course, too early to consign Old Man Mars definitely to the undertaker. Until the full text of the security pact is known, and final action taken, the impulse to crown the Dove of Peace should be restrained. Put enough is known to justify the claim that the 15th of October, 11)25, will go down in European history as an important and epoch making a day as the same date in the sporting history of Pittsburg, Penn. which, one might add in the popular vernac ularis going some. , . Old Man Mars has been knocked down by enlightened and generous statesmanship. That much is certain. ' "Whether he has Lccn knocked' out is, of course, another matter. Put as in Pittsburg' today, so in Locarno, sufficient unto the day are good tidings thereof. Personal Health JSerric By WILLIAM BRADY. Still, with all its faults, prohibition doesn't seem to affect those who really wish to remain sober. RipplingRhumQS ty wait Mason ' Ml I HEALING DOPE Heal, bronchial or spaHmodle asth ma Is a protean and perhaps in most caseH a protein problem, like urticaria, commonly called hives, a blood rela tive of asthma, both asthma and hives being so to speak sired by Allergy and darned by Anaphy laxis. The protein Bub stanco usually re sponsible for asth ma or hives is a foreign one, that is, a protein which Is not normally pro duced in tho body and not normally acceptable to the body aa food or otherwise. Moreover it Is probable that the foreign protein which Is responsible for the reaction we recognize as asthma or as hives gains entrance to the blood through so mo abnormal route, and not thru the regular or normal process of di gestion. When the foreign protein is a food protein, say white of egg, or the protein of strawberry or of lob ster, it probably gains entrance to the blood by absorption through some le sion such as an ulcer In the stomach or intestine or through tho normal process of food absorption hut In nn incompletely digested stage. Other abnormal routes by which protein ma terial may enter the blood are Inhala tion (say of the dander ot- feather dust of an animal or fowl); poHslbly direct penetration of the mucous membrane of the homo by the sharp or spiked pollen granules (In hay fever particularly,): and sometimes by hy podermic Injection, say In the ana phylaxis or allergy or protein poison ing sometimes produced by a dose of antitoxin or scrum. Finally, scientific research students hold that the origin of the foregoing or abnormal protein in some Instances is an abnormal pu tref lent Ion or decomposition In the Kastro-inlestlnal tract a genuine il lustration of a state which 1 ordin arily only theoretical, auto-lntoxica-tinn; but this auto-inffkxlcaiion hypo thesis that the guilty protWn poison Is prod need by bacterial activity in some frfUH of Infection. How come certain Infants or young children cannot take the tiniest bit of white of egg, not even the little speck of it that inay be preent in a bit of cake or custard, without suffering a severe anaphylactic reaction or aller gic shock in the form of a furious gas trointestinal upsef, or a seizure of asthma or a severe attack of hives? Such Individuals are "sensitized," that is, rendered unduly susceptible to or hypersensitive to the protein. This may be demonstrated by a simple test a minute, homeopathic quantity of a pure solution of the protein In ques tion is applied to a small scratch on tho skin or Insert od into the skin on a fine needle, and if the Individual Is "sensitized" to the protein, a charac teristic wheal or hive like reddening and swell lug occurs at the site of the test, within an hour, resembling a mosquito bite. This method or deter mining the individual's sensitization is now much employed In the diagno sis of hay fever (to Identify tho pollen or pollens responsible) and asthma, and indeed It is the only way In which any great benefit can be obtained in many cases. Sot Knough Wheeze or Sneczo Diffculty of breathing, with more or less wheezing, is a feature of sev eral common disease conditions which it will do no good to enumerate. It tnkes more than a mere wheeze to makea case of real asthma, just as it requires more thnn a habit of sneez ing and watering nt the eyes or nose to constitute hay fever.
