COURT CONDEMNS

prohibition act, whh undur way In the
tVdernl court tmluy, and the cae is
expected to be 'given to the jury by
the middle of the afternoon. MrCam)-,
bull and Todd are charged with trans
portation of liquor and were arrested
in the Klamath-Ashland highway last
April.
Fred Morey, n 7g-year-old Ktainath
county detective, who has featured
as n solver of some of the leading
crimes of that district In the last two
years, was railed as a character wit
ness, as was V. C. r.ecKduldt, a
rancher. Neither gave any testimony,
which caused the court .to inquire
why they had been subpoenaed, char
acterizing it as "a fraud upon the
government." W. P. ' Myers, former
district attorney of Klamath county,
was also called as a witness.

Hundreds of spectators yesterday
watched the second ascension of the
helicopter invented' by Don Juan ile
LaCierva, which, made Its successful
Initial flight on Monday.
Captain Courtney took the machine
over Laffnn's pluln and covered
about ten miles.
From the airdrome the helicopter
arose to an altitude of more than
1000 feet, then swooped to within one
hundred feet of the ground and again
Bhot vertically into the nir. It was
maneuvered easily and with only the
jotary overhead piyipeller working.
The machine landed with Its wings
flapping as gracefully as a bird.
Previous descriptions of the Clerva
helicopter or "autogyrro," suid it con
sisted of a fuselage with a 130-horse-power
engine driving a propeller in
the ordinary way. Above the machine
on a vertical shaftare four bird-like
flapping wings. When revolving at
120 revolutions a minute these exert
more than sufficient force to lift the
machine. The devolving winds, it is
clulmed, will permit the machine to
descend safely even with the engine
dead.
