Inquiries nn to the precise nature and purposes of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ In America have flooded the organization since its research de partment published a report on the social consequences of prohibition. , The federal council Is described hy Its officials as an organization thru which 28 Protestnnt communions, .with nn adult communicant member ship of more than 20,000,000 persons, carry on cooperative work. It was orftanld nt Philadelphia In 1908, Its purpose being stated In the constitu tion as "for the prosecution of work that could be better done In union than In separation." The aims of in council arc: To express the fellowship und Catholic1' unity of the Christian church. To brlnff the Christian bodies of America Into united service for Christ Qnd the world. To encourape devotional fellowship nnd mutual counsel concerning the spiritual life and religious activities of the churches. , To secure a larger combined influ ence for the Churches of Christ in all matters affecting the moral and social condition of the people so as to pro mote the application of the law of Christ In every relation of human life. , Tho council Itself consists of about 400 members -elected by the various communions.' It meets onco every four years. The executive committee, consisting of official representatives of the constituent bodies, meets once a year. The administrative commit tees meet once a month.
