VANILLA EMCT LEADS TO BO DAY llecause of his badly Inebriated con dition, on vunllla extract which caused his car to go oft the Pacific highway three miles north of the. city at about 2 o'clock yestorday afternoon and tilt In a dangerous anglo In a ditch, where upon he went calmly to sleep Inside ' the car, Francis Adair, about SO years old, an Ashland restaurant proprietor, 1 was given a sentence of 60 days in : the county jail, a (100 fine and had his driver's license revoked tor one 1 year. In Justlco Hoe's court at Jack sonville lute yesterday afternoon. The arrest was made by Allison Moulton, assistant district attorney, In his rapacity as doputy Bheriff, al though Chief ot Police Adams ot this city was at the scene at the same time, but had no authority to make the arrest, being outside the city limits. It Is soldom an Intoxicated man Is haled into court while still under the influence, but under the circumstances Mr. Moulton thought It wise to Intro duce an innovation. It seems that when Adair's car went Into the ditch that individual deemed it a good time to curl up and go to Bleep. Then a woman from the vicin ity phoned In to the Medford police station that she had passed a man asleep or dead In a car along the highway. Thoreupon Chief Adams drove hurriedly out to the scene and was Just awakening Adair when along came Assistant District Attorney Moulton, who was driving home from Ashland. ' When thoroughly nwnkened by tho two officials the befuddled Ashland man was at first Inclined to be quite abusive and started to make wild claims as to his identity, at times claiming he was a Texas bad man, a United States marshal from Texas, even going bo far as to pretend to search for his badge; and finally claiming to be a prominent citizen of Aslilnnd. On him was found one full bottle of vanilla extract and an empty bottle of the same fluid. Adair was finally bundled Into the assistant prosecutor's car and hurried over to Justice Roe's court at Jack sonville. En route he juggled a hand full of $20 gold pieces and ever and anon proudly proclaimed that he was going to court to get a light fine. MANN'S STORE HAS II Another birthday for Mann's biff department store has rolled around and John C. Mann in celebrating with a great anniversary ale this month. The store now occupies two floors of the building at Central and Main street nnd has en trances on both Main and North Cen tral street. John C. His success has been remarkable and his prcsont .store stands as a tribute to his ability 'as a merchant antt business man. He lis actively assisted by John Moffatt l in the women's department and Char lie Campbell In the men's section. According to tho records of Mann's store 112,650 customers bought mer chandise at this store during the 1925 season, which evidences tho popular ity of this big department store In southern Oregon. One of the features of tho birthday celebration is a giant birthday cake. COMMUNICATIONS Chamber of Commerce Delighted. To tho Editor: It is gratifying in the extreme to be able to congratulate 'the city of Med ford on its wonderful response In this, Its latest step, which I believe to be the Initial one in the iirogresslve movement for a greater city. An overwhelming majority has fallen in step with the spirit of pro gression and nothing short of a na tional calamity, and It Is a debatable question at that, can materially change this. . If we build only for the present and consider too seriously the problem of the past, wo woefully lak the vision for the future and cease to be the In spiration to the generations to follow. Had wo any less resources we might set our sails a bit closer to tho winds, but with the fullness of the orchard, the forests, the grain fields, the stock ranges and the various natural bounties, the plctiiresquenoss nnd the beauties of the climate, give us tho utmost confidence. We nre glad to have had a part In this, our latest step in the building of a greater and bettor city. ROIIKKT W. CLANCY, Pres., Chamber ot Commerce. Medford, October 9. at locnl hotels Include I'.
