warrants charging murrter out against
John W. Smith, C3, a boxing pro
moter, and Krunk L. Hart, said to
have been an associate of Smith,
authorities hero were directing a
search for theso men !n the hopes
of clearing the mystery surrounding
the shooting to death of Thomas
Dnvery, Kelso editor, Julio 19. The
last clue to tho whereabouts of
Smith was a report that ho had been
seen two weeks ana at The Dalles,
Ore. A reward of $500 hud been of
fered for smith's arrest.
Evidence which led to the charges
against Smith ahd 1 lart, and to the
arrest for investigation of W. L.
Thompson who was taken into cus
tody near Oak ridge. Ore,, developed
through identification of tho re
volver with which Dovery was shot,
said Assistunt Attorney (.J en era 1 Jt. U.
Stiarpe.
The lead to this Identification was
furnished by AssiHtant United states
JJlstrlct Attorney Itynon at Portland,
who Informed the Kelso officers that
a friend and client of his had ob
tained information leading to the
Identification of the gun. I-ate yes
terday Cowlitz county commissioners
declared that an agreement had been
mado with Hynon's friend C. (J. if 111
of Portland, to pay him $5000 for
the information.
The commissioners repudiated the
contract because they held it was
entered into nt J'ortland which was
outside their Jurisdiction and because
they could not legally pay more than
$.00 as it reward.

the security pact conference, which
