Letters should be brief and written in ink. n "J: " '"V Mn Address Dr. William Brady, In care of this Antitoxin What could possibly causo a parent to object to the administration of antitoxin to a child desperately 111 of diphtheria, as did tho poor Ignorant father In tho case we described the other day. Of course tho child may have been doomed In any event. Nevertheless there Is a mathe nmthical certainty nbout this :f act Antitoxin adminis tered in sufficient dose and early enoueh in the course of the dlphtnerla, prefernbly Into a vein,' completely antidotes the diph theria toxin or poison and saves life. The only conceivable reason why a parent -should prohibit the adminis tration of such a remedy as antitoxin to a sick child yet offer no objection to tho administration of any other remedy the doctor might care to give such a child, is iRnorance, superstition and credulity, and this state of mind la not only self propagating, it is propagntod and exploited by a small army of snide merchants, purveyors of nonmedical nostrums and new fangled quacks, mainly through the columns of the shady, shoddy "mag azines' which exist primarily to pro vide a medium whereby these legi timate nnd highly respected dips may get their hands into the pockets of tno unwary public. Nature's Own Antidote. Ignorant, superstitious, credulous people have only vague ideas about antitoxin. The very name of It con notes something evil or dangerous In their poor minds. .But any one of ordinary Intelligence should under stand that anti means against or op posed to, and that toxin means poison; In short, antitoxin Is antidote, the an tidote for the poison of diphtheria. Antitoxin Is manufactured by na ture in the blood of every victim of diphtheria, and if enough is produced tho diphtheria patient presently gets well naturally or spontaneously, with out any human aid wahtever. If the natural process of antitoxin manu facture is a little slow, the diphtheria poisoning presently gains the upper hand and the victim succumbs, un less human aid is prompt ly' Riven, and even then the aid may come too late. Healthy young horses are given minute doses of diphtheria toxin or poison (not diphtheria germs, but tho poison wormed by their growth, as al cohol is formed by the growth of yeast plants), which are gradually In creased as the horses gradually de velop immunity against the poison. In uiuu norses so treatea develop suffi cient Immunity to withstand an enormous doso of tho toxin which would quickly kill on ordinary horse. The blood of these Immunized horses Is used ds antitoxin, of course after it has been scientifically tested and freed of its corpuscles and concen t rn t ed and s t a n da r d i zed , so that a given quantity contains just so many units of nntltnxln. When you buy a home or an automobile you pay so many thonsnnd dollars for it and not bo many cents. Ten thousnnd units of diphtheria poison acquires 10,000 units of anti toxin to neutralize It, nnd It is a bad gamble to give any lesH untitoxln In the first dose in any case. "We can't afford to gamble on tho child's ca pacity to manufacture his own anti toxin, when there are plenty of horses that have the finest care and the kind of pleasant exercise which mighty few horses enjoy, to provide the pre cious antidote in unlimited quantity.
