That plan provided for a new water system, witli nil,' Huttc Spring ns a source, and t ho reconstruction of the present city pipe line, so Hint Medford may fiet not only plenty of pure spring water, without danger of contamination, but can secure' this practically unlimited supply in every part of the city, nt an equal pressure. ' The conditions which rendered this antion necessary nrc now known to all. The present water supply is polluted, has lieen for three or four months, and under the circumstances it can not be purified satisfactorily or safely. ' ' The supply is also limited in extent, and according to the hcRt engineers available, will soon b inadequate for Mcdl'ord's normal growth. The question therefore conies down to this: Should Medford continue to spend ipa'j.OtW or :!0,()00 a year on the present pipe line, which if put in perfect mechanical condi tion could only give Medford eventually an inadequate water sup ply, unfit to drink a large part of the year, or should it cut off this expense entirely secure a new water supply, solve Medford 's water problems for nil time, stimulate. Medford 's growth and prosperity, and safeguard the health of the people of this city. v 1 'I There is-only one sensible answer. These bonds should be voted. They rmisUic voted. Defeat for the bonds would represent a ca lamity which any citizen familiar with the actual conditions, hesi tates to contemplate. One day n four year old son of this poor, ignoniftt, superstitious family fell 111 with what the p. i. s. mother and the neighborhood Salregamps diagnosed as a "cold." Having some loose change the change of such peo ple Is always loose the poor, ignor ant, superstitious mother sent over lo tho crafty, canny, conscienceless corner druggist, to whom the family owed nothing, and the o. c. c. druggist took a chance and broke the law gov erning the practice of medicine but that law Is only a joko to our. respec table, church going, criminal classes anyway and at tho snnm time dis honored the profession of pharmacy by taking Ihe history and 75 cents, assuring tho poor, ignorant, supersti tious people the child had just a croupy "cold" which was going round and sending a package of "cough and cold cure" with written directions and a personal assurance that this medi cine was "perfectly harmless." And so on nnd so forth the unfor tunate child drifted from - bad to worse in the next few days, being han dicapped to a certain extent by the "cold," which in this Instance hap pened to be dJphtheia, and the "per fectly harmless cough and cold cure," which, of course, was just the usual disguised dope, a uarcotlc, always dangerous, for children, particularly children already gravely ill. This malfeasance was later reported to the state health department with a pro test from the physician, but they're atl politicians and if the health officer wus censured at all it was done in a very private manner. However. It didn't matter, for nt this juncture the sick child's poor. Welding Opposed To the Editor: Now a few words ns to the proposed new pipe line. This is to be of steel pipe elortricnlly weld ed. Our pamphlet does not say that the makers of this pipe will put up a bona fide guarantee that this pipe will last for 20 years. A guarantee Is of no earthly use unless It Is a boon fide one. Now. here Is a point that must be well considered. Klectrlc welding dpes not prove durable when applied to iron or sieel that Is used to hold or convey water: 'for this reason: electricity magnetizes steel, and where steel or Iron Is sub jected to a number of magnetic cur rents, or changing forces. (which takes place when a steam Is electri cally welded) this changing force pro duces a lagging effect, or retnidntlon, destroying Its adhesion, thereby leav ing minute cavities where coroslon can take place through the penetra lloll of the water. In a few years this rust has so de stroyed nnd thinned the metal that leaks commence. You can find proof of what 1 am telling you by going about town nnd counting tho mnny electrically welded hot water tanks that householders have been forced to abandon on account of their leaking at the senilis. But, some one may say. this pipe we are going to put In will be specially treated. Ojnnted that It Is, but, Ifll hot water tanks ore gnlvnnlietl both Inside nnd out. Answer Cockroaches will , eat mixture of one part of plaster of mrls to three parts of while flour, and then if water is available they will drink, and the plaster of naris will set in tholr intestines and kill them. One of tho best cockroach poisons Is sodium fluoride, a powder which, nijjiiy be freely sprinkled or blown Into corners or crevices of closets, pantry or other favorite haunts of the rouches, and not swept away for several weeks. It is comparatively harmless to human beliiKs. but It adheres to tne roadies feet and they lick their feet anil die. rumination kills cockroaches, but not their ckks which are deposited deep In cracks or holes; the ettcs hatch mid tho younK roaches develop In six to 2 months. I en joy a general sense pt well being after the morning cold bath, llut you say It increases the blood pressure, and some members of my father's family have had serious trouble with arteri osclerosis. Shall I keep on with the habit ?( W. C.) Answer There is a slight tempor ary rise in blood pressure associated with tho healthful reaction or sense of well being you enjoy after such a cold bnth. This does not Imply that the habit of taking cold morning bnths induces pathological increase in blood pressure. No matter whether you are 29 or 79, If you enjoy the re action after the morning cold bath It la good medicine for you.
