TWO MEN were fixing a spotlight on their car on a lonely road neur McMinnville the other night. : They were breaking no laws. property. They were making no disturbance. But suddenly with out warning, there was a shot from nearby ambush; one of the men fell dead, the other was mortally wounded. A funeral is being held today. There was a hearing yesterday. The man who fired the fatal shots is "very sorry." lie thought the two men wero robbing his melon patch. He thought his gun was loaded with rice instead of buckshot. Bather serious "thinking" for the dead and the bereaved. What light had the McMiniiville farmer to think he was being robbed, when he wasn't? AVhnt right had he to think his gun was loaded with cereal, when it wasn't? Things have come to a pretty pass in the state of Oregon if law-abiding citizens pre not to be safe from shotgun attacks, when going about their legitimate business on the highways after dark. There is too much of this sort of thinking, based upon ground less fear and suspicion. There arc too many loaded guns, too many trigger fingers ready to press first, and think it over afterward, i It is time to make an example of the man who takes human life and then presents as his only defense the fact that he is sorry. Lime, unslnckPtl lime, quicklinme, calcium oxld, as it is variously called, is made by culclnlng (heating, roast ing or partly burning in kllnn) lime stone, chalk, or marble. Limestone, chalk or marble is chemically lime car bo n a t e (calcium carbonate), nnd the heating drives off carbonic acid gas (carbon doxld.) leaving the burn lime, calcium oxld, medically called cnlx. This unslack llme is a good disin fectant .and tlordorizlng agent, but It should not be confused with "chlor ide of. lime," otherwise known as chlorinated lime or chlorinated cal cjum or hleaehiiiK powder. ljime is encap enougn to permit 01 its liberal use for disinfecting and de odorizing organic matter of any kind, particularly excreta. For disinfecting such matter, tho lime should be used only when freshty slacked, for it is comparatively Inert In the dry state and soon loses Us disinfecting and deodorizing value on standing after slaking. Whitewash Is Blacked lime mixed TVlth water. Quicklime,, formerly used In the dis posal of dead bodies, Is just ordinary llmo. Milk of llmo Is slaked lime mixed with from four to eight times Its vol ume of water to the consistency of thick cream, and this, when freshly prepared. Is Iho best form in which to apply lime for disinfection or de odnrtzatlon of organic matter. Slaking means mixing the lime with water, in the proportion of about two pounds of lime to one pint of water. Tho lime will nbsorb about that much water. When slaking, tho mass be comos heated and the air escapes from the porous llmo with a hissing noise. When this has taken place the lime la slaked. The slaked lime Is limn or calcium hydroxld or hydrate. Upon standing exposed to the air this calcium hydroxld absorbs still more water from the air ond some carbon dlxld and becomes converted into In ert calcium carbonate again, practi cally what It was before It wont thru the lime kiln. ' A strong, fresh milk of llmo wilt disinfect feces or other organic filth when mixed with the material in about the same amount as of the ma terial to be disinfected or deodorized. In one hour. For this purpose the lime should be freshly slaked, or at least not more than enough for two days use should he slaked nt one time. Tho fresh dry lime, without moisture. Is comparctlvely useless for disinfection or deodorizing. Tho common lime used by masons In the right thing for disinfecting or deodorizing organic filth. From this mme common lime the now less popular lime water is pre pared, by slaking a piece of lime as big as a walnut in two quarts of boll Ing water In an earthen Jar. stirring well and allowing -to settle: the clear upper liquid Is then lime water. A tablespoonful or two of lime water was formerly mixed with the day's supply of food In modifying milk for infants, but oatmenl or barley, water Is more popular and probably better for that purpose. The lime water is a good mouth wash ond Is sometimes useful to mix with milk for Invnlids. an It prevents excessive curdling of the milk. Aa a means of supplying the element lime or calcium as food, lime water Is of little value; n pint of milk supply more lime than a pint of lime water does. A tablespoonful of lime water Is a fair dose, sometimes grate ful as an antl-neld for sour stomach and in some cases of nausea and vom iting. ' V ' Preliminary Note on Chilblain In chilblains apply tincture of todln as noon 091 the trouble be sins, and you will find relief. Answer. A good Idea, though It Is well tivus only one application of the lml In. and not to apply It a second lime until th lft's of a few days. I An Apple a Dnjr Kvw Uortor Away J PRTPAY. Now cornea a doctor who Is reputed to be a great baby spe cialist and says no child under seven years of age should eat raw apples. He made this statement in an address to mothers. Please give me your ad vice about it. (Mrs. F. E. J.) Answer. I believe some such dic tum was given by one of the old time baby specialists in his textbook. For Infants It is better to give only fruit Juice, or the pulp of stewed or cooked fruit at first. But I .should give a three-lyenT-old child raw apple, even nt the risk of keeping the doctor away. This sounds pretty good so far, I ad mit, common sense and nil that sort of thing. Well, let's spill the beans now by adding an Impertinent ques tion: Why is a baby specialist If there is good ground for baby or child specialists, then we ought to be logi cnl and have an assortment of youth specialists,! adult specialists, middle age specialists and eld age specialists, liut these here now child specialists carry the children along to old age In many cases, so perhaps there is no real demand for the other specialists. Seldom docs a child specialist plead lack of Jurisdiction until the patient's arteries are obviously sclerotic or the buld spot covers both fontunelles.
