LIQUOR WORTH A
TO MEET WILLS
I AHEAD OE GENE
NE WYOI1K. Auk. 1 2. (A. P.)
Fistic manaKera and promote today
entered upon the socutiil round of
their heavyweight aiu-llou with Jack
Dempaey and Hurry Wilis on the
block.
Promoter Tex UEi-knrd, with (iene
Tunney of New Ynrk, Kilned to a
con tract to fiht Harry Wills next
month, held one Important telegram
and was waiting for the wires to win
him another. The message contained
nn urgent request from Dempsey to
sipn Wills for a championship hnttle
as Hoon as possible. He awaited un
other from Wills, touring "somewhere
over there," repardini; tho Tunney
flRlit.
Paddy MiillinH, manager of Wills to
day had tow conferences on his
Hcheduh. After discussing with Pro
moter Floyd FltZKlmmnns "f Michi
gan City. Ind., tho hitler's proposal to
stage a Wllls-Denipsey fight next year,
lie reserved decision until word Is re
ceived from Wills. Kit z.si in ninns,
packing - an agreement signed hy
J)empney to box the negro arranged
for another conference today. Mul
ling nlKO booked hlniself for a session
with Rickard at -which they planned
to take up both the Tunney and
Dempsey fights.
Jack Kearns, who is manager of
Dempsey. Recording to ills own view,
and who has nothing to say about
Dempsey's affairs in the opinion of
tho 'champion, exploded once yester
day and threatened In do so again
Friday.
"111 have plenty to say to the box
ing commission," was the proini.se of
tin; man who guided Dempscy.iiirough
his important battles, declaring . that
he would sign Jack to fight Wills and
Mickey Walker to defend his welter
weight championship against Daw
Shade.. ' '
These forecasts threatened to touch
off a counter bomb In California.
Dempsey, nettled by the action of "the
New York boxing board in declaring
him ineligible for delaying the Wilts
negotiations, has' stricken New York
state off tho list as a possible ' scene
for the defense. of his title. He has
alHO rejected Kearns.; Since the latter
still holds a contract ns the cham
pion's managtM, prospect 'ofthrowing
the situation in n complete jumble
loomed as an almost certain outcome
of fulfillment of Kearns' promise. . .
Mulllns was 'inclined to sidetrack
the Tunney issue in favor of the pros,
pect of clinching the Dempsey fight.
Rickard intimated that the biggest
pur?e ever offered Wills was awaiting
the signature of the negro's manager
to a contract to fight the New York
heavyweight, did it not tempt Mulllns.
As. a matter of fact. Mulllns ad
mitted he could not he tempted by
anything so long ns Wills continued
to remain ubsent in 'Europe. Wills not
Mulllns and Wills' wife, who has fre
qeuntly aided the negro fighter to
.make decisions, will cast the deciding
votes. ' , ,
