ROARING CARS AT QUICK ACTION IN 2 GRASS FIRES Two grass fires . summoned the fire department to - action yester day afternoon, ono of which could have been serious had It not been for the timely arrival of the depart ments chemical car. The other, which was on North Peach Btreet, was not serious, two men quickly putting It under control. The threatening fire, which oc curred about 5 o'clock, was burning at the end of West Jackson just outside- the city limits near a large wheat field owned by W. H. Gore, and had nearly ignited . the field when It was put under control by the use of 70 gallons of chemicals. The last two numbers to )m played by the Orator lako Toniplo band at its weekly concert In tho city park tomorrow night will also be played at the- northwest convention of tho D. (. K. K. order at Aberdeen, Wash., next week, which the band will at tend. As the band leaves Saturday for this convention its members lust week had decided to not give a concert here this week, .but at their rehearsal last night thoy chunged this decision. . Over a hundred girls will at tend the five-day mooting, and will be quartered at Medford homos during their brief stay. It Im planned by local, citizens to take the g'lrls to Crater Luke on Sep tember 7 If a sufficient number of cars can be procured. As the con ference Is still several weeks distant, It Is expected the cars can be pro cured with little difficulty. EUGKNE. Ore., July 30.-?-Harvcy Jones, 12, son of Jacob Jones, who lives dri- Mosby. Creek, near Cottago Grove, was drowned yesterday while attemuting to ride a horse across the creek, according to word received horo. The reports stated that the boy fell off tho horse when In midstream. - It Is believed that the horso. In swim ming, kicked the boy after he had fal len in the stream. Other smull boys nt the scene ran away after the accident and tho ac cident would have been unknown at the time except for tho arrival of a brother of the Jones boy. Ho could not swim, so called for help. A grap pling hook, Improvised from a ruke. was used and the body was recovered 45 minutes after the Jones boy had been lost from sight. Lion Club Roars Lion President Juddy took advant age of the prerogatives of his office at the meeting uf the Lions club hold Wednesday noon at the Hotel Medford and Inflicted a speech on the assem bled Lions concerning the gasoline and oil business In southern Oregon. The speech was very Interesting, how ever, and was duly enjoyed by all present. The new entertainment committee, composed of Doctors Elliott and Sleeter, Is on the Job and promise some good entertainment for the month of August, : Air.. Whillock of O. A.
