Central press Correspondent. DAYTON, Tenn.. July 15. John1 Thomas Scopes Is sick of it all. He1 wishes the trial was over. . Ho Ih i tired of" the role of ninrtyr. Each, f! 1 1 I .Inv ' A rl a tn his1 d 1 scomfort. Re porters, often called stony heart ed, are beginning: to pity him. Some-: times Scopes must! envy men on trial for murder. When court adjourns they have a nice', lonely 'cell to so back to and soli tude In which to bathe their fouls nnd rarvps. Ren nes OOW-M T SCCrpES ia free to go where he likes. But .there is no place he can go for peace. He wanders in the streets, stared at or pursued. His temper is short. His attorneys appear to be vexed with him at times. Naturally,- all this excite ment has changed him in some re spects. He Is accused of being "up stage." This is not true, in spite of these changes, he still is John Thomns -Scopes, high school teacher uncomfortaoly playing a role quite beyond his hlstronlc capabilities. Lives i n AI ea go r Q u a rt ors. He lives in the Bulley boarding house, in Market street, two blocks from the courthouse. Ho rented the room when ho came to Dayton In late August- 192-1, fresh from a university. It is on the second floor and its triple-framed window looks out through the oak and maples at the courthouse tower. The f-oom contains an Iron bed, a waehstand and Tits trunk. Ho keeps his clothes in a closet. The closet Is in dis array. There Is no table in the room. There- was one, but he told his landlady that she could put it in another room, for someone else might need it more. He reads, his now voluminous mail sitting on tho bed. which sinks down a foot or more with the weight of his body, and puts his body In an uncomfor table position. " No books aro In sight in .the room. The bathroom is on the first floor and likely as not. when he comes out after his morning dousing, he finds reporters, barring his way to the stairway. Te objects to the in trusion. Later the same reporters meet him on the street ond he speaks to them as pleasantly as he speaks to anyone else. Is Popular In Town. John T. Scopes hasn't had. a "regular girlM in Dayton. In the last two months he has been seen frequently with . All of the girls like him. In fact, everybody in town does, particularly his former students. They "swear by hint." i Ho is big and blonde and ?-i years old. He has abandoned his horn-! rimmed spectacles since his pictures began to flash into the first pages of the country. i He came to Dayton ns teacher In elemental sciences, Including biol ogy, in the Rhea Central high school. He coached the foot 1m II team last fall and Is given credit for Its un paralleled success. . Football Is one of his loves. He was not a gridiron star at the University of Kentucky, his alma mater, however. Scopes is putting Dayton, on the map. But it is doubtful if Scopes will be a teacher in Dayton's high school next year.- He isn't In the list of teachers selected for tho high school, although no successor lias been named for his place. Superin tendent " of Schools Walter Whlto says there will never again bo a school teacher in Rhea county who docs not believe In every single ;ord in the- Bible literally. Scopes is weary of his role, yet, when it Is all over, he will miss tho spotlight. ven now ho is a little resentful of the tendency to push him in the background. , The "noble red man" of early American history was the orlglna "Major Ozmft'IAwberctiffffll!r was not then' his foe.- Cook with gas. tf Notice or Adnilnls(ni(oi'H Sjilo In the County Court of -the State of Oregon In nnd for tho County of j Jackson. . i In tho matter of the Estate of Mar- Sweet Corn s TOMATOES GREEN BEANS OTHER VEGETABLES Phone 865-J NEAR CITY LIMTS Stocks and Bonds We solicit inquiries to buy or sell any marketable listed, local or un- nstea securities.
