Mr: Coolidge Finds No Rest
From Cares at Summer
Home Klan Issue Presents
Knotty Problem Coal
Strike Another Worry.
SWAMPSCOTT, Mass.. . July , 2.
(A. P.) President Coolidge is reach
ing the conclusion that ti president,
regnrdleBH of whore lie goes cannot
evade the cares of his office. Coming
to the seashore for relief from the
enervating heat of Washington, the
president is finding that although
removed from he seat of govern
ment, there are problems to plague
a vacationist.
Mr. Coolidge was confronted today
with several issues, still somewhat
aloof, but never-the-less holding vex
atious probabilities.
The Ku Klux Klan controversy
threatens to take a new Uirn as a
result of the announced intention of
the organization to invite the presi
dent to review its pnrade and nd
dre'ss its ' members " in Washington
early In August. No formnl invita
tion has yet been received but it is
considered unlikely -here that thei
president will be able to accept, par-!
tloularly as. he has indicated that!
he 'Still will be summering here at
the time. i
The announcement that an invI-
tat Ion would be extended, however, I
'has brought communications to Mr.
Coolidge from a number of Indi
viduals and organizations opposed to
the Klan, urging him to emphati
cally decline and, In some instances,
appealing to him to do something
to prevent the holding of the Wash
ington meeting.
. , Another cloud on the horizon Is
the possibility of a strike between
anthracite operators nnd miners over
a. new wage scale. The president Is
watching developments with interest,
chiefly through the newspapers, but
nothing has been said or done here
Indicating what he will do if a crisis
arises.

The fact that all non-residents or

that their sedan was used as sleep

PHILADELPHIA, July 2. Grover
C. Bergdoll says that the pot of
gold he burled in the Maryland hills
contains more than $2-10.000.
This was revealed yesterday in a
sworn statement by him submitted at
a hearing of counter-suits, filed by
.Mrs, Emma C. Bergdoll, his mother,
and Thomas W. Miller, alien prop
erty custodian. The statement, wit
nessed by a notary public In Baden,
Germany, was sent to Mrs. Bni-gdoil
to aid in her contention that she
had turned over all of her son's
property to tho alien property cus
todian, Bergdoll has been living In Baden
since a spectacular escape In lit 20.
An intimation that his mother nnd
buried a large sum of money also
was contained In the statement.
"The $105,000 which my mother
claims to have hurled is absolutely
her own," said the statement. 'The
$240,000 which I concealed, (tho gold
buried in the ground) and the gold
notes I took along t) Europe were
my own property.' No person living
outside of myself has the sliiihetHt
idea as to where I took the gold
after I loaded it in my car in Penn
sylvania." Bergdoll escaped from army guards
at his mother's home here while on
a trip to dig up the treasure after
he had been sentenced to serve five
years In prison for evading the draft.
A master in chancery recommended
that the custodian be ordered to re
turn to Mrs. Bergdoll $140,000 in
cash and securities worth several
hundred thousand dollars.
