EXAMINATION QUESTIONS STOLEN AND SOLO TO- STUDENTS FOR $1 0 PER Remember, When You Buy at GETS BIG BOOST (From the Sunday Oregonlnn, Toit Jntid. Oregon, May 31, 1925.) Under the above JieftU, the. follow ing: Item concerning the local power company was glvn prominent men tion Iri the Sunday Oregonian of Voit Innd. Oregon, .'heading the financial column bf that paper. 1 ...... When the California Oregon Power dompany sold ' more than $1,000,000 f lta preferred stock fn 8 V& months almost entirely to Its own customers and without aid of puid salesmen, it set up a record which: may well be the envy of a lot of large utility and other corporations scattered over the nation. - ' : Though officials of the company have not specifically snld so, It Is understood that the sales of more than 10,000 shares of the preferred stock were made entirely in the terri tory in southern Oregon nnd northern California served by the company. Three division headquarters are in Oregon, at Medford, Roseburg and Klamath Falls, and a fourth is at Yreka, 'California. - When an inquirer was told the facts regarding- this 1A1 usual customer-ownership sale of stock by Wil liam H. Crawford, manager of the company's new industries department, the listener was inclined to "tnke the statement with a grain of sale." Mr. Crawford then set the facts down in writing as follows: "Our entire No. 4 Issue was dls- Sosod of at $98.00 . per share. The kpipalgn lasted from July 10, lf-M, to April 1, 1926. The entire lsue of 10,000 shares was disposed of and there was an over-subscription the last day of 292 shares. In addition to this we sold 803 shares that had been reacquired, due to-, various' causes. This sale brings our totul number of stockholders up to 3117. "Klghty per cent. of our preferred stockholders ar consumers. Wo have never employed, a stock salesman nnd the entire Issue' hns been disposed of by members of our regular brgoniza tlon for a very small commission. The ratio of cash sales to time sales shows that out of the 10,000 shares they di vide almost ejftiptly, 50-60.", . . While stock salesmen were not used in the selling campaign of the California Oregon Power company, the issue was well advertised In news papers of the district. This company has been making an excellent record for growth in every direction and for consistent gains in gross revenues and net earnings. Every item of its annual statement has steadily increased since I9l8.;ln 1924 ,'gjfcss revfitjBi? ttfr ttJiVtiftGA and net revenues before depreciation. Interest and- taxes, - amounted to $1,000,875. . '. , MADISON. Wis., June 12. (A. P.) University of Wisconsin officials con Itinued their investigation today of I what Is said to be the most flagrant case of theft and sale of examination (questions ever uncovered nt the state ' school. ' j ( Although first reports said the i theft had been wholesale, it was be i lieved after the Investigation hnd been under way yesterday that only exam ination questions In the romance lan guage and Spanish departments were involved. M embers of the faculty of the ro mance lnnguage department were re ported to have been In session until after midnight Wednesday comparing class grades, with examination grades following the complaint of a student who gave the faculty the first clue. It is also reported that at least three of the university buildings, were broken into and professors' desks rifled to get copies of examination questions. Students have reported that they were approached by persons who offered to sell mimeographed copies of questions for $5 to $10 a set. If It Is Impossible to deal with indi vidual cases it may be found neces sary to repeat examinations In all courses where there is suspicion that the questions were stolen and sold, it was hinted. One .of the most Interesting tales that Capt. O. C; Applegate.of Klamath Falls, has to tell, is how Lake of the Woods' received its name. ' It was In the year 1870, when Cap tain Applegate and four or five scouts were attempting to find a way from Ashland to Pelican' Bay, that Would avoid the round about and hard trail through the mountains. They follow ed what has turned out to be the Dead Indian- road,' and had camped for the night In a thick stand of timber, know ing from the nature of the timber that fhey were near a body of water. Early "next morning as-the gray dawn spread Itself oyer the country and birds gave further evidence that the water was near.. Captain Applegate made his way through the thick lodge poje pines and rame upon the lake which he estimat ed watt cbout four miles long and two miles wjde in places, all around was a thick stand of timber, well guarded by the tall'mounlaliiH. so he called It the Lake of. the Woods. Some, time later a cnbln was built near the south end of the lake, the lo cation, of which the ;Boy Scouts will try to' find this summer,' and If suc cessful, -will mark .the location as the first occupied by Captain Applegate in the early seventies. .. . Mt. Pitt is so near that the summit may be reached by. a two day trip fronvfthe camp and about ten other hikes' all of great interest have been mapped out, these with other attrac tive crimp trtctlvitles will give a real opporfunity to do some unusual scout ing.
