OREGON, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 1925 NO. 69 SECOND DAY OF AMUNDSEN AIDE SPEAKS TO LOCAL KIWANIS CLUB "The Mikado" Well Known Comic Opera to Be Presented by May Valentine Company. L VOLT TOURISTS' SETTING ASIDE OF GREATLY ENJOYED TREMENDOUS HIT Mi MAIL CHUUA The aocond night of Chautauqua brought to the platform a striking 1 personality in Cant. - Sigurdur K. Qudutndson, an Arctic explorer, in his' lecture, "liack from Russia." He com manded tk relief expedition to the North of Siberia in 1920, returning to the United States in 11)23. It woa a straight forward story of a daring and energetic man, winning through great opposition of both na ture and mankind. It was a stirring recital of thrilling experiences. Capt. OudmundHon stated that after an ap peal from the soviet government he fitted out a relief expedition at Nome to carry foodstuffs and medicines to the Russians at the mouth of the Koly nlak river, Ho found the settlement in charge of deported criminals, whom the com munists had made officials. At first welcomed, ho was later dealt treach ery by the governor and ended by making a trip overland by dog and reindeer teams to the soviet headquar ters at YakutRh. On this journey of 2800 miles he passed hrough country Inhabited by three different peoples, : none of which is like our Ksktmos. ' One of them being an agricultural t folk. This region ho found to contain 0B. remarkable timber belt 2000 miles long and 300 to 500 miles wide. The Arctic is not the barren waste usually . pictured. In VakutHh ho found the cheka.ru!- ing In an arbitrary manner, living off the fat of the land, while the peasantry was negeiccted ana often starving. Freedom as we understand it, was un known there. No one being allowed either to travel or to tulk without per mission of tho soviet. . dipt. Gudmundson was offered gen erous sums of money nnd great min eral concessions to preach bolshevism Jn the United States upon his return. 1 Upon his refusal he was Imprisoned and sentenced to death, but escaped and finally returned to his vessel. His experience has caused him to wonder What Is belnir clvon to thnxe now in this, country who are advocating rec- ' ognltion of tho communist govern ment in Russia. At the end of the lecture a young man was dressed in a seal skin suit given the locturer by Capt, Amund sen and like the one now worn by the lost explorer., Leake's orchestral entertniiiers.gave the prelude to the' evening's program. The Junior lady, Cluiio Mary Smlh, was introduced "and Invited the young- , sters to take part in tho Junior Chau tauqua. Captain Sigurdur K. Gudmundson, a native of Iceland, now an American citizen, was the principal speaker at Kiwnnis luncheon Monday. He Hotnt , Supply oconomy ' Buy MomMotor Oil in quantity and save the difference! Don't think that 1 am too lazy to put MomMotor in your car for you. The idea is that you can save money by buying Msasrbla in quantity and keeping a supply in your gar age at home, it's handy, too. Ill supply you with a barrel and stand and you can cut the cost by having this better lubrication on tap. Anything from 15 gallons on up. , Come in and I'll give you the figures. MonaMotor Oils & Greases FHIPFS SERVICE STATION Riverside at Jackson Phone 1037-R tho declared his faith in Amundsen's being alive with some or all of his crew, ne said that an experienced and in telligent explorer like Amundsen would certainly be aljlo to live "o(f the country" In the Arctic during the summer months. Our duty Is to find the last explorer during the summer and secure his return before the long Arctic night sets in, the speaker said. Captain Gudmundson is a follow countryman of Roald Amundsen's and had met him In tho ..rctic when Gud mundson wan captain of the "Polar Hear" nnd Amundsen was making his famous northern passage. Gudmund son has offered his services to aid in the search for Amundsen. Captain Gudmundson spoke briefly of his own experiences in the north of Siberia as an Arctic explorer. His relations with the soviet government has made him a pronounced anti-bol-shevic. Communism as ' practiced there means starvation, oppression and often deuth to tho subjects, while the officials lived in abundance and ruled by extortion and high-handod tyranny. Captain Gudmundson warned against the encroachment of communist teach ing and propaganda in America and urged that Amorlcans make sure that all teachers from the -primary schools through the university are perfect in their devotion to American principles. U W. Elliott of Salem, an experi enced tax authority, spoke on a pro posed income tax measure of which he is the author. He condemned the recent Oregon measure in positive terms but declared that an equitable measure would mean equalizing the tax burden so thnt all would bear a fair share and thnt the excessive bur den now borne by property taxes would be relieved. He pointed out that even the bad income tax recently repealed had not driven business from the state, sup porting his contention by giving RUitistics of the corporation, local and I WASHINGTON. Under the able direction of May Valentine, one of the most prominent stage producers of today, tliu favorite Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, "The Mikado," will be presented nt Chautauqua. The presentation of such a pretentious opera as the Mikado Is a distinct acquisition to the general pro gram. Under Miss Valentine It will be given In Its entirety ns to costuming and elaborate singe settings. The cast has been curefully selected, ench voice eminently fitted to Its particular role, nnd each slncr u good actor. The funny story and the splendid music which Gilbert nnd Sullivan gave the opera seem to take on new life and interest with every presentation. Yum-Yum and her lover Nankl-Poo, Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner who eventually has to marry the ugly and elderly Katlsha to escupe the Mikado's wrath, rooh-Bnh. and all the other comical characters will be well presented.
