but activities were held up because
of delay in the architect's pluns.
F. C. Clark of Medford designed the
building. The present plans make
this a thoroughly up-to-date build
ing, and it will be one of the largest
exclusive ladies drygoods stores in
southern Oregon or northern Cali
fornia. Dr. Mattie B. Shaw entertained
very pleasantly at her home Friday
evening. The guests included the
doctor's stuff at the hospital, their
wives and the nurses employed.

The city administration will start to
enforce the dog license ordinance Just
aa soon as an officer Is appointed to
give lifs entire time to enforcement of
the measure, which has not been ac
tive for years, but which the city
council last Tuesday decided to bring
to life and rigidly enforce.
Hence it behooveB owners of pet
dogs to as soon ns possible visit the
city recorder's office in the city hall
building, pay the license fees and ob
tain from the recorder metal, tags
which each licensed dog must wear.
After the enforcement is started all
dogs found not wearing such tags will
he rounded up nnd Impounded. The
license feo Is $1.50 for a mule dog and
for a femnle dog. '
The only license tag taken out so
far has been by Mrs. Scott Woolf. and
consequently her pet fox terrier is
wearing license tag No. 1.
At its next meeting the city council
will pass a new ordinance forbidding
any dog to be at large during the
summer season, 'whothor or not. li
censed. This means thnt each- dog
must be tied up or confined on the
home premises of the owner.

Airplane Fire Patrol
To Be Started July 1
8AJC FRANCISCO. May 25. Head
quarters of the United States forest
service here announced today that an
airplane fire patrol Is to be establish
ed for California, Oregon, Washing
ton, Idaho and Montana on July 1. and
will continue throughout the summer
and fall fire season.
Five bases will be established, one
ch in northern and southern Cali
fornia, one In Oregon, one in Wash
ington and one in either western
Washington,, northern Idaho or west
ern Montana. Kighteen airplanes will
be used. Santa Monica will be the
base in southern California. None of
the other bases have been selected as
yet.
The pilots will be, recruited from the
officers of the army reserve corps hut
the mechanics will be from the enlist
ed forces for the most part.

election Tuesday ofternoon. May 26.
This is the last meeting of the year
and all members are urged to at

to be brought before the member
ship and at the program hour en
tertaining numbers will be given.
The Daughters of tho Nile will
have its ceremonial in Ashland Tues
day May 20 at Masonic Hall. Din
ner will be served at tho Hotel Ash
land, followed hy a dance. . It Is ex
pected that there will be a largo
attendance.
On Friday evening of this week, a
group of the pupils of Miss I mo
gene Wallace will be presented In re
cital at the parlors of the Presby
terian church. The program will
begin promptly at 7:45 p. m. All
who are interested are cordially in
vited to attend. Some of those on
the program appeared at the last
annual recital and it will be inter
esting to note the progress made.
The W. W. G. girls to the number
of .a dozen, met at the Lithla Purk
to enjoy a picnic with Miss Louise
Hunderup and effect a reorganiza
tion. An election was held, resulting
in the election of Morea Oil more,
president; Lucile Beswick, vice-president;
Birdina Elder, secretary and
treasurer. This guild is one of a
number o'f missionary societies which
Miss Jiunderup. is assisting in der
veloping tp a greater efficiency. ThltF
work is her special province, how-:
ever. Miss Morehouse and Mrs. Tra
vis are the two counselors appointed
for this organization. The time ot
meeting wus set' for the first Thurs-,
day In each month. The delightful
picnic luncheon was a part , of the
good time with two birthday cakes
honoring the anniversary of Mrs.
Thomas Sorrell.; Mrs. H. P. Holmes
and Miss Hunderup - supplied the
cakes which were in the Guild colors
of blue and white with the appro
priate setting of candles. A vase
presented Miss Hunderup by the girls
was a pleasant feature of the occa
sion. The pastor joined the picnic
party in lime for the happy visit and
luncheon.

drews spent Sunduy at their home in
Ashland.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Umphlette
and tittle daughter left for their
home on the coast the last of the
week. They -came for a few. days'
visit with Mrs Umphlette's father
and mother, Mr. and Mrs. E. - E.

Mrs. C. W. Fraley Is entertain
ing her sister, Mrs. Mason from
lown. Mrs. Mason will make quite
an extended visit.

vices at tho Presbyterian church on
Sunday morning. Tho church was
the Baptist church of Grants Pss

very pleasantly for a number of dinner-

Judge L. H. McMahon today issued
an order directing Frank C. Bram
well, state superintendent of banks
to appear in court Wednesday -morning
at ten o'clock and show cause
why he should not be punished for
contempt of court 1 ?Phe action came
when Bramwell foiled ' to- obey an
order from the. court Saturday dl-l

morning to explain an affidavit ' of
prejudice which Bramwell had filed '
directed at Judge McMahan. Tho J

Putnam of Salem against Bramwell
In which the plaintiff started action
against Bramwell to require him to
maintain the headquarters of the
state banking department in Salem.
.Vopowing filing of the proceed
ings against Bramwell, the superin
tendent filed the affidavit of preju
dice ugainst Judge McMahan In the
affidavit charging McMahan with
being prejudiced against Bramwell.
On filing of the affidavit Judge
McMahan declared he did not know
Bramwell and insisted Bramwell ex
plain why ho considered McMahan
prejudiced. Bramwell wus not in
court, but his attorney contended the
court had no right to question Bram
well as to the facts surrounding the
prejudices alleged, but the court's
only course -to pursue was to iesue
an order transferring the cause to
another court.
Instead the court issued an order
demanding the presence of Bram
well today to explain the affidavit
of prejudice.
When the time came for Bram
well's appearance today, neither
Bramwell nor his attorney appeared.
Judge McMahan intimated today that
