As the car passed him he roc- ognized it as tho stolen car and turned around and pursued it until running j alongside near the Jackson Hot 1 Springs ho commanded the men to halt, at the same time dropping 0 little to the rear as a precaution. The cur bandits however kept on going nt full speed, as did Talent, and then thoy opened fire on htm from the rear wlndqw of the cur, firing five or six shots and knocking out a front light of his car, and he in turn firing several shots at them. The chase continued until tho Star cur outran Talent, and tho bandits turned off the highway on a side road at tho Jackson ranch, where they abandoned their cur and fled on foot. Friday morning In the Ashland railroad yards the officers came upon five men about to board a south hound freight train, who fled on their appronch und when cornered In an ulley. Talent fired a shot Into the ground which glanced and struck one of the men in the shoulder. The sus pects Immediately surrendered. IH Acting upon a request from a group of citizens said to he committed to neither site In the high school con troversy, the Med ford school board agreed today to have representutivos at both the Holly Street and P. & IS. grounds from two to five tomorrow, when citizens are requested to visit the respective sites und gain first hand information concerning them. The school board has no Intention of favoring one site or the other us far n these meetings nre concerned hut will give iic i s and figures con cerning both. The school board believes the first step to Intelligent voting next Friday Is accurate Information which It is believed can be secured by personal inspection only. SALMON BAKE AT The RoRohurx Rod and Gun club will hold the annual walnion bake, their big event of the yeur, tomorrow, in conjunction with the barbecue will he the shooting program, consisting' of 25 and 50 bird events. (1923 levy) tho total was I600.762.4K. Both include collections up to May 7th. This year's collections were . 5-15,211.61 greater than the previous year. Atty. o F The preliminary hearing of Robert Harnltsh of Eagle Point, under arrest on the charge of forging checks on the state highway commission, which hearing wus continued from yesterday afternoon in. order to give time for the highway department to check up the payrolls of ilarnish, was begun in judge Taylor's court this afternoon. District Attorney Chaney asserts that Harnlsh, who has lor a long time been a valued employe of the highway commission as foreman of a crew of men at work on the Crater !ake high way, with th reputation of turning out un extra large amount of fine work, has made a complete confession to him about how he had puddod his pay rolls to the extent of pocketing about f 100. The district attorney says that while a complete check has not yet been made of the accounts, the alleged peculations will not nmount to more than $100 or $150. This checkup was still in process today by Mr. JJromley of Grants Pass, the division state highway engineer in this district, and by James Devers of Salem, attorney for the commission. Harnish, it is charged, worked by padding the pay checks of certain members of his crew and induefng them on his payment to them of the eact sum dun for their work to turn over to hitn the balance, on his state ment that he needed the extra money to purchase at once needed acces sories on the job until the state fura lulled the money to do so. i Harnish is a young man with a wile and 3-ycur old child.- "Chlcklo," Sunday, Crntcrlun.
