The first monthly open forum of
tho Chamber of Commerce under the
new directorate nnd with Br. H. V.
Clancy as president was held at Hotel
Medfurd last night and was fairly
well attended. The enthusiasm mani
fested and the outline, of work for the
coming" year as explained by the sev
eral directors points to one of the
most active years in the , history of
tho organization. '

splendid music nnd their quartet,
composed of Don Newbury, Larry
Mann. Mr. Dawson and Mr, Allen,
rendered two excellent numbers.
James Stevens thrilled those pres
ent with his rendition of "Smiling at
Trouble'! and responded to a hearty
encore with "Road to Mantlalay." He I
whs accompanied by Mrs. H. S. Deuel.

of requests coming from people In the
1 east and middle west regarding Orc-

m Prof. -Irvin Vining delivered one of

j sound logic and business sense and
i abounding with oratory and -wonder-j
ful word pictures of tho grandeur of
i Oregon and her prospects for the
future.
He told of his visit to the east a few

I in his addresses at Pittsburg, Pa., and
other places to interest people in tho
northwest and especially Oregon. In
stead of starting out, as they expect
ed, exploiting Oregon and boosting
the wonders of the west, he first told
of the beauties and grandeur of their
own country,' of the memories the
; people of the west have for the his
i toric places of early days, of Valley
; Forge, of Yorktown, of Gettysburg,
i and of the historic shrines of Phlla
I dclphia. He complimented them on
their wonderful highways and told
tbein they stretch out unttj they reach
the great out-of-doors of the west,
the virgin forests, beautiful streams,
fertile valleys,- snow-capped moun
tains and the ocean, to which the
people of the west invite them and
will be glad to extend a henrty greet
ing. 1
The speaker said what we need in
Jackson and Josephine counties in
order to realize on the irrigation proT

many people of wealth who come
here merely to make their homes.
The people here, he said, must assist
them in every way possible and must
vote and work for those things that
will develop all parts of the state and

I California a high official of this state
1 made the statement that he had
J talked with a farmer in this vicinity
! who told him he was receiving $250
a year rent for his farm, and that he
was paying $:!60 taxes on the same.
This state official then said he asked
the farmer what the place was worth
nnd he said nothing; it was a liability.

Mr. Vining pnid a high compliment
to the friendly feeling now existing
among southern Oregon people, and
to Kmil Mohr, the proprietor of Hotel
Medford, which he said is unexcelled.
Captain Ralph Cowglll told of the
coming1 encampment of the national
guard, of the Immensity of the propo
sition, and predicted a very successful
nffalr. He stated they have secured
60 head ;of riding horses nnd now
want GG head of work horses.
Glen Fabrick told of the De Molay
state meeting here and said they are
still short of accommodations.
Divorce activity, after a lull of 30
days, has been .resumed In the circuit
court at Jacksonville, the total di
vorce suits flld so far this year now
totalling 29.
Edwin Kenneth Pennoyar in a
complaint filed Tuesday, charges that
his wife Anna, was cruel and Inhu
man, refused to cook, and he had to
make the bed when his day's work
was done. He also alleges that Mrs.
Pennoyar was uncongenial, unfriend
ly, and unsympathetic," and when he
tried to be affectionate, said "Get out
of here." He asks for the custody
of a minor child, and severance of the
marriage ties. They were married at
Roseburg, July 6. 1923, and Mrs.
Pennoyar is now with her parents at
Day Creek, Oregon.

divorce suit of Alice I. Black against

eporter, has been named referee by
Circuit Court Charles . M. Thomas.
This case has been hanging fire for a
ear, and involves the custody of a
child, an automobile, and property in
Ashland where both parties to the
action reside and are well known.
By virtue of an order signed Tues
day, Marsden Bishop Is ordered to
provide $75 suit money to his wife.
Laura, so she may be utile to retain
counsel in his action for divorce. They
are residents of Jacksonville.

present unanimously decided not only
to enforce the dog license ordinance.

years, but also to pass a new ordi
nance to be in effect June 1 forbid
ding all, dogs, whether or not licensed,
running at large during the summer,
in order to protect gardens and flow
er beds and also to reduce the mad
dog danger to a minimum.
The dog license ordinance which
goes into effect June 1 provides for a
$1 license for male dogs and $3 for
female dogs. The city government
will put on a dog catcher to round up
all homeless dogs not wearing tags.
Every dog owner must take out a
license, upon payment of which he
will be provided with a metal tag to
be worn on each licensed dog's collar.
These tags have already been sent for
by - the city and will be here within
the next two weeks.
The new ordinance to prohibit
licensed or other dogs t uning at large
during the summer, means that each
licensed dog must be tied up at home
during thut period. The city govern
ment's decision to enforce the dog
license ordinance nnd to pass the new
ordinance was brought about thru
many complaints made about dogs
ruining gardens and flower beds, nnd
the large number of homeless

murder charges were being prepnred
by county officials today against
George A. Conger. 34. who early Sun
day morning ended a love triangle

Conger Is held In the city Jail until

Conger, n customs Inspector, came
here from Relllnghnm shortly before
midnight Saturday night. He went to
tho home of his wife, who had ob
tained un interlocutory decree of di
vorce and found that she and the
two Conger children were out riding
with Jleale. When they returned a
violent quarrel between the two mn
ensued. Conger fired four shots
three of which hit lleale. Mrs. v...-
ger nnd the children saw the killing.

himself and his wife, had been en
