other example of silly legislation, and an unwarranted insult to
the younger generation of the land of fh'e free and the home of the

But if the statistics presented to support this proposal are
correct, and there is reason to believe they are, then ill spite of
the new-law mania, here is statute that should be enacted.
For according to statistical evidence, iu the one state where
such a law has been passed, the public expenditure on account of
aged and dependent parents has been reduced forty per cent.
Evidently our civilization has some blowholes when it fails to
keep intact the affection between parents and children, or fails to
retain enough sense of duty to make it a work of pleasure to
brighten the years of twilight for indigent fathers and mothers. Ob
viously too there is a big field for home missionary work if this
charge stands.
Some may urge a discussion
than more compulsory legislation,
