voters yesterday approved bonds of
(376,000 for the proponed change of
the sou roc of city water supply from
the Willamette to the McKenzlu
river. The vote cost in the city wan
fairly light and ftonio of the other

today in the United Htates district
court, Against Charles W. Anderson,
collector of internal revenue, for
$5000 excess income tax which she

herd, charged with tho murder of
his foster son, William Nelson Mc
Clintock, pleaded not guilty today
when formally arraigned in crimi
nal court.
Chief Justice Jncob Hopkins over
ruled a defense motion to quash the
indictment.
The state asked for an early trial,
but the court said tho date could
bo fixed by tho trial judge when tho
case comes up in the regular course.
It was the first time Hhepherd had i
been In court since his third unsue-(
cesHful effort to obtain freedom from

prevent the possibility of the Impor
tation of the Colorado potato beetle
pest In shipments of potatoes from
Washington, Oregon and Idaho, the
state of California has put Into effect
a virtual quarantine, Charles L. Rob
inson, state supervisor of horticulture
has been advised.
During the active period of the pest
from April 1 to September 30, all
potatoes from the Pacific northwest
states must bear certificates of In
spection by the state departments of
agriculture in order to bo shipped
into California.
The Colorado potato beetle is not
found in districts of this state, where
potatoes are grown in commercial
quantities, Mr. Robinson said.
"The threatened quarantine has all
the earmarks of an embnrgo for com
mercial reasons," Mr. Robinson de
clared.
