as the measuring instrument, a radio
signal was recorded us making a com
plete circuit of 8500 miles in .004
seconds between the corporation's
sending signal as it was sent from a
key In the radio corporation's office
in New York and aguin as It came
back on a lowor wave length from
Warsaw. The photographic record
was produced by an Indicator at
tached to the receiving set and the
time was measured by tho dint unco
between tho photographic impressions
on tho film.
Jn calculating the transmission time
of tho radio signal, a carefully fig
ured broadcasting point on this side
and between the receiving and send
mg stations at Wursaw. With the
wire transmission included, the lapse
(if tho tune between the sending and
return of the signal was figured at
.130 seconds.'

Tho Oregon Agricultural college
band which will appear hero March
19 at the Armory has played at every
world's fair held on tho Pacific coast
since 1905. Organized in 1803 and
directed by student leaders for many
years, tho band has grown to its pres
ent proportions of from GO to 70
members each year. It has won tho
name of being ono of tho best college
lunula on tho coast. Captain H. 1
Heard, former student of Herbert 1.
Clark, world-famous cornntlst and
band leader, has directed the band 10
years of its 31 years existence.
in addition to these trips, the band
has always taken an annual concert
tour during spring vacations thru the
siato or udjoinlng stales averaging 900
miles.
Kvery year has been marked in tho
history of tho organization by some
Improvement in its standing with the
college and stale. Recognition is given
the band men In place of tho military
drill requirements fr graduation from
the institution. Credit is also allowed
for tho music lessons taken on band
instruments taken under Captain
Heard's Instruction. The strength and
reputation of tho organisation has
increased until it is able to take ex
tensive trips that play a big part In
attracting student musicians to the
college.
Many former O. A. C. band men
have made notable records. During
the war It was found that 60 music
ians and threo band masters formerly
college men were In the service of tho
United Slates army. Nine of the for
mer members were takn to Washing
ton, D. C, last yenr with the Portland
Shrine band where they played with
thousands of other musicians under
tho direction of Sousa. These men
were also Invited to play with Sousa's
band when It appeared in concert at
Portland In January.

WHILE LAST YEAR
NEW YORK, Mar. 12. The Amer
ican Sugar Refining company received
profits of $8,50B,163, In the form of
Investment income- and interest in
1023. of which $5,552,487 represented
income from Investments largely In
sugar producing companies, says the
annual report made public today.
This amount, with $2,055,675, inter
est earned, was sufficient the report
said, to cover a loss on refining opera
tions of $1,6.070 and to provide' for
depreciation, bond Interest and pre
ferred dividends and leave a balance
of $865,107 for surplus. Kales of var
ious investments gave a profit of
$4,402,631, which has been set aside
to strengthen the company's refining
facilities in New York harbor.
Earl D. Jtabst, president, empha
sized that 1023 was unprofitable for
cane sugar refiners. Tho price of raw
sugar changed 115 times, he said, the
extreme fluctuating causing a loss of
$1,693,070 on 1,165,000 tons of raw
sugar reflnod by the company. In
1023 the company refined 1,650,000
tons at a profit of $10,083,832.
Sales of the company totaled $200,
000,000. Nearly 600,000.000 pounds
of package sugar alono were sold.
Sugar refiners had all tho ups and
downs of a ten yenr pre-war period
crowded Into 1923 Mr.. Itabst asserted,
the company's Inventory fluctuating
as much as $2,500,000 In a single day.
In disorganized post-war prices sugar
went to greater extremes than any
other commodity, the report stated.
Compared with average prices of 1010
sugar's fluctuation since the armistice
Is shown to have been greater than
the combined fluctuations of wool,
rubber, coal and copper.
Women comprise ahout half the
company's 26,781 stockholders.
127 BODIES TAKEN
CASTIjK GATR, Utah, Mar. 12.
Early this morning, 127 bodies had
been recovered from the Utnh: Fuel
company mine No. 2 in which 173
men were entombed Saturday by an
explosion.
Work of removing tho bodies was
greatly hampered during tho night by
unexpected obstructions encountered
and also by water in the mine work
ings. Workers reported to the fuel
company hoademartors early this mor
ning that fourteen additional bodies
had been located. In one of the rooms.
Not a pump has been worked in
tho mine Interior since the three blasts
early Saturday morning put them out
of order. As a result, parts of the
mine are declared to be flooded.
which necessarily makes tho removal
of tho remaining bodies extremely dif
ficult. Plans wore mado during tho night
to put one or more pumps into opera
tion this morning if possible, in order
that rescue crows may continue their
work.
The first funeral service for tho vic
tims will be held ut Custle Gato this
morning. " .
ATHENS WRECKED
ATHENS, Mar. 12. (By Associated
Pross.) A bomb was exploded early
today at tho entrance to tho British
legation, causing material damage,
but injuring' no one. Greek officials
expressed belief tho incident was
staged In an effort to discredit the
government.
Tho premier and minister of inter
ior expressed the regrets of tho Greek
government to the British minister
after tho outrage. An inquiry was
opened under tho direction of British
polico officials and several suspects
were detained.
