The Associated Press, the In tr motional News service and the Uni ted Press all carried Mr. Maxim's story In a way that has beeq very injurious to wholesale and retail grocers who sell tea and coffee. - In a cable to this country Sir Charles Illgham, who was here recently as tbe representative of the India tea growers, declares: , "It Is plain that Mr. Maxim Is try inn to use tea as a weapon with which to fight the prohibition law, to which he Is opposed. I understand he has employed counsel to attack the va lidity of tbe 18th amendment, declar ing that tea and coffee drinking should ha prohibited under the Volstead act just the same as alcoholic beverages are permlttod. "Mr. Maxim seoms to confound the words 'Intoxicating' and 'stimulating.' Tea, if properly made, Is one of the finest and raoBt healthful stimulants, just as beef and milk are stimulants. Considerable decrenso from last year from tho mar ket supply of early spring lambs In April, May nnd June Is indicated by present condltons n the principle early lambing areas, according to a re port Issued today by the United States department of agriculture. The sup ply in July nnd August promises to be larger than that of last year. The greater part bt tho supply of spring lambs in April anir Hay comes usually from California, Arizona, Ken tucky and Tennessee. Conditions In all these states except Arizona are less favorable than last year as regards production nnd it is possible that the foot and mouth situation in California may cut off all supplies of live lambs at eastern markets. In June early lambs from the corn belt begin to move in volume and there is usually some receipts of early lambs from Idaho and Oregon. Conditions both In the corn belt and In the northwest Indicate a larger lamb crop than last year and with favorable spring weather the June movement from these areas may be larger than that of last year. Conditions in California have been generally unfavorable for the early lamb crop, especially where rainfall has been only 25 per cent of normal and there has been little pasture or green feed available. ;!-.; In the Sacramento valley conditions have been more favorable and possibly almost ns many lambs as last year will bo raised. Under the most favorable conditions from now on there will be hardly 175,000 head for eastern ship ment this year as against more than 275.000 head shipped last year. In Arizona there will be from' 40.000 to 60.000 early lambs for market. There are 40, 00IJ in the southern val leys that will hegin moving shortly af ter April 1 nnd continue through May. In Iowa sheep have wintered well nnd there probably will be some In crease In the early lambs. There has been plenty of winter feed In Idaho and sheep . wintered well. Weather conditions have been excel lent, especially in February, when the bulk of early lambing takes place. In Oregon the winter has been one of tho most favorable ever known and sheep are In excellent condition. The .early lamb crop is somewhat larger than last year and tho June shipments will at least equal last years. In Washington few early lambs are loaded before July. The early crop Is estimated at between five and ten per cent larger than last year's and sheep and lambs are in the best con dition in years.
