oil investigations, President Coo'.idge has kept his head. He has per
sistently refused to join the extremists on either hide.
His answer to the extreme Republican partisans, who have tried
to maintain that the entire affair is and has been merely a political
move on the part of the opposition, was to promptly call for crimi
nal action.
I lis answer to the extreme Democratic partisans, who have tried
to smear oil over the "White House and represent the Republican
party as a shelter for crooks and second story men, has been to meet
every insinuation with a mild but crushing rebuke, and regardless- of
political advantage, to grant every suspect, whether a member of his
official family or not, the fundamental' right of being regarded as in
li'icent until guilt had been proved.
As a result President t'oolidge's prestige has undoubtedly been
greatly enhanced by the oil investigations, mid the people of the coun
try as a whole, are undoubtedly grateful, that they have in the White
House a man who can be depended upon to keep his feet on the ground

gardless of everything, but the fundamental moral issues involved.
