Figures on carlot shipments of pro duce and merchandise Into and from Grants Pass last year reveal a most distressing situation, wherein it is seen that more is shipped into this section than has been Mit out and that, in Htt'iid of improving, the alluullun lias been growing worse. The records ut the local freight depot show that in the past year, 128 cars of farm pro duce were sunt out to other places while 172 cars were shipped in. This difference of 44 curs reveals the fact that agriculture in this county is not sufficient to maintain the population of the city and county. Of course. shipments of lumber and box shooks, and other articles of manufacture would raise the total of the outgoing cars to a much greater point but the figures supplied above deal .only with actuul farm . .produce. Of Italian Prunes Oregon Is naturally adapted to the production of the tart Italian prune. As far ns competition Is concerned, no state in the union other than Wash ington, produces any material quan tity of this crop.. In western Oregon. tho quality and yield are the equal of any section and as low as that in any other prune producing area. Tho amount of land available for tho pro duction of this crop In Oregon Is un limited, and the only factor which limits production is the market. If a demand could be created for two. three, four or five times the number of Italian prunes produced in this state today, there is abundant land available for their production, but of course this kind of production is entirely out of the question until the demand Is created. The present consumption of fruit In, the United States today is approxi mately 335.672.821 bushels. Present dietitians of the country tell us that the people of the United States should be consuming 340,740,000 bushels. This gives us a very narrow margin of about 5,000,000 bushels. This figure will be more than wiped out In a very short time by the new acreage of fruit coming in. Our only chance of In creasing the consumption of prunes In this country to any material extent is by advertising and taking the market away from some other line of fruit. In other words, the American people aro consuming approximately as much fruit as they need and only those fruits which are properly advertised by the producer are going to be con sumed in sufficient quantities to keep up with production.
