shovel was begun this forenoon for
the foundation of the new Cooley
theater at the corner of South Cen
tral and K. Eighth streets, and from
now on the work of building the
structure is expected to progress

The outlook for the cattle Industry
Is more optimistic at this time than it
has been for several years, according
to Dr. W. H. Lytle, state- veterinarian,
who recently returned from a visit to
Malheur, Baker and Harney counties.
The open winter has provided good
grazing thruout that section, whilo
cheap hay has also made for low cost
of wintering the stock, which has
come thru the winter in good shape.

Reduction in rates on lime rock
moving from tho stato lime plant at

Saturday by J. H. Mulchay, assistant
freight traffic manager for the South
ern Pacific railway system. Tho rate
reductions will range from 10 to 30
per cent. Encouragement of better
fertilizing of soils In western Orogon
is hoped for by this reduction.

Lo Roy Van Gordon, charged with
unlawfully possessing Intoxicating
liquor and unable to pay his fine, was
sentenced to tho county jail for
twenty-fivo days by Justice Glenn O.
Taylor In the Justice court Saturday.

cur on a much traveled part of tho
highway. The arrest was mado by
Deputy Sheriff Georgo B. Alden.

The Crater Lake highway from
Medford to McLcod Is at tho present
j time in perfect condition as found by
'a number of motorists who made the
drive Sunday. The road from McLeod
to near Cascade Gorge is at present
under construction and Impassible ex
cept for horses or teams. However
this construction work Is nearlng
completion ann the road will be ready
for surfacing by the 1st of April. This
part of the road, has been so straight
ened and widened .that It Is hardly
recognizable as the old highway Those
who live at Prospect ancr on the closed
portion of the road aro obliged to
leave their cars on either side of tho
construction and use teams or else
take a detour.
