She deplored the fnct that so many clubs . at the present time are leaning more and more on speakers to give them a message to which they listen and top often then forget, but urged all Women to put into actual practice the Ideas given Jay outside speakers and then develop them along original lines In local clubs, alio urged all clubs to develop their younger women and emphasized the necessity of all mem bers, but officers particularly, know ing their own organization and know ing the different departments possible in each club. Mrs. Dunbar pointed out that the woman's club has risen from a corner In the comic section to a place of real responsibility In the world and that 'now women must mussure up to their opportunities. She explained the . various depart ments of tho 8tate and General Fed eration and how each club affiliated with these may profit from each de partment. A luncheon was held at the Civic club at noon in honor of Mrs. Dun bar, for of fleers 'and heads of commit tees only. Tho nfrernoon session, however, was open to the public and a large number of women were ready to 1ioar Mrs. Dutihar by the time the business session was over. At the close of the afternoon ten was served, Mrs. E: V., Carter and Mrs. E. D. Brlggs presiding at the tea tables. Mrs. Luis Ulrlch of Medford spent the day in Ashland, where she at tended tho Civic Improvement club and also transacted some business. E. Lamb of Eugene, plant chief of the. Telephone and Telegraph com pany and O. P. Moss, division traffic engineer o Portland, were in Ashland Monday on business. Mrs. Sarah Gardner, owner of the bazaar,. Is building a beautiful new home on -the . corner of Church and High streets. Tills is a bungalow type and Will be very beautiful when fin ished. J. A. Cary of C'liilotfuin was in Ash land Monday, attending to sovcral business interests here. The Washington's birthday ' ban quet which will be given at the Ar mory on that day, under the direction of tho Chamber wf Commerce will combine the Llthlnns, Kiwanis, D. A. Rt and other organizations In one general meeting, each group having their separate places and designs. This is to be a very Interesting and worth while banquet. Talent districts and the ABhland business men, under the direction of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce. Professor Lindgren of Oi A, C. gave a Brief talk on the live stock Industry and Mr. J. H. Itobbins, manager of the Ashland Fruit and product assocatlion discussed the question of -an Increased supply " fresh vegetables to be extended over a longer period than at present. A very interesting and profitable meeting was held by the Chamber of Commerce this noon, it being the reg ular forum day. The main lek',r for the day was Mr. Albert E. Hb erts. Mr. Roberta brought out the toot that the present chnos of tne World was occasioned by the recent war and also said that the hope of the world is in the future genorutlon. lie urged that the boys be helped in every way to live In Ideal surround ings, both morally and physically. He urged each man to "adopt" a boy and help him to live a clean life by otter ing his friendship and advice In every Way possible. Mr. Roberts also gave a very fine address to the high school students In the afternoon. In this ad dress he particularly urged that everyone make an effort to live a clean life, and to trust in God. He said that the cigarette evil of today was one of the largest things in a person's life, and that a boy s h'c may be Tuincd simply by smoking a few cigarettes. He urged that every student do his or her best to live a clean life, regardless of his surround ings and cricumstances. He gave many amusing Incidents during the course of his talk, which added greatly to the point, which ho so ef fectively brought out. Tho American I-eg!on held a 'spec ial meeting In its quarters and Seoley Hall, chairman of the circus commit tee, reviewed the progress of the plans for the indoor circus that had been made up to this time. Com mander Paul McDonald, chairman of the Ticket committee for the circus, told the boys that he was arranging for several novel ticket selling and advertising plans for this coming great event and solicited the co-opo-ratton of all the members in making his plans successful. Every indication at this time points towards the American Legion Index).' Circus being a tremendous success, and as this is the "first event of this kind to be held in Medford. the legion boys will make it one; long to be re membered. - Harry Zangley, a slip of a hoy, con victed In the cricuit court of burg lary, and whose dash for liberty esca pades have occupied prominent spots in the news was sentenced to five year si in the state prison at Sale in Tuesday by Circuit Judge Charles M. Thomas. The youth will ho taken to Salem tonight by the sheriff. Zang ley appeared for sentence handcuffed, i. Zangley leaped from a train In Cali fornia last week, was recaptured at San Jose, Calif,, and broke nud ran from his., captors, only to he halted again when 'bullets whistled, about him In a railroad yard, was brought back Monduy night by Deputy Korn crook. On the trip back, he tried to chew through the chain of the hand cuffs, and marks of his teeth show in a soft spot, where tho links had been soldered. He was arrested at Pomona, Calif., two weeks ago under the name of Sand mire. The prisoner Is a mito of a man, only 19 years old. Ther he remained until 12, was released, nnd returned when found guilty of "beating up a girl." Zangley claims this charge against him waV false, ' and he was freed again at 16.
