Acute Recurring Pernio This Is nothing but another name for chilblains. From the fact that there are other names for It you may deduco that we don't know so very much about it. I spoke succinctly In a previous article about the cause and preven tion of chilblains. Now I grow prolix, for we're coming to the treatment. Mild chilblain Which Itches or burns may be re lieved by bathing wlth a pinch of alum in some warm water, drying and powdering profusely with plain talcum or boric acid powder. If tho Itching or burning Is intense sop on with the fingers Borne calami n lotion containing one or two per cent of phenol. Kuch a lotion is made by mixing these ingredients: Zinc oxid 4 drams Calamin 4 drams Glycerin 2 drams Lime water 2 ounces Carbolic solution (6 per cent) 2 ounces Robo water;.:.. ......Enough to fill an 8 ounce bottle. Five per cent carbolic solution is , the standard phenol solution which ' may be legally sold by druggists with- , out prescription. . .. AVhen blisters form they should not ; be disturbed until It is necessary to be up and about; then each blister should be punctured with a sterile needle near its lower side and the serum gently pressed out upon a clean towel or cloth. The surface may then be freely powdered wlth talcum or boric powder Vr, any, combination of these. In a number of cases of recurring chilblains success in prevention has been obtained by taking calcium lactate or calcium chloride, about 10 grains after each mjcal for a few weeks, to supply an adequate calcium ration to tho blood, which is pre sumed to be deficient in its lime con tent, wherefore the vessels are too permeable. Either the lactate or the chlorid of calcium should be taken very well diluted with, water. This line of treatment has proved effica cious In relieving hay fever in some cases, that condition, too, being per haps invited by a deficiency in cal cium metabolism. t is an old belief Jrhnt the frequent rubbing of the feet with stimulating lotions or llnimonts uch as camphor or witch .hazel or bay rum or just ordinary bathing alcohol Improves the local circulation and tends to prevent the chilblains. A modern method of considerable value is the X-rny treat ment which hns given satisfaction more particularly in tho prolonged after qffertH of ehilblaln or frostbite. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Never Mind Uie Operation You Had Many a correspondent's chance to get some sympathy If not some advice from me goes glimmering in the first page or two when the correspondent insists on telling me (1) all about the operation, (2) how many doctors gave the patient up to die, and (3) what opinions the neighbors, Mrs. Sumsey and Mr. Ben Told, rendered at various critical turns. I never could get really interested in the study of history, but I do like to ex tend a helping hand or at least a sym pathetic hearing whenever I can do so without first grappling with the neighbors, Mrs. Sumsey and Ben Told. Snoring What is the cause, and is there any relief for snoring? I am kept awake all night by my husband, who contin ually snores. (Mrs. R. B.) Answer. The direct cause 1b relax ation (flabbiness) or lowered tone of the lining membrane of nose and throat. This may be principally from some local condition which calls for treatment by a physician who . treats nose and throat diseases, ' or it may be merely a local manifestation of a general or systematic flabbiness, such us develops in persons who eat more than enough to maintain them. at nor mal weight and neglect daily exercise. Tho Protein Ration Please tell me whether a quart of fiklm milk a day will supply sufficient protein for a man of sedentary habits, so that he can get along without meat, eggs and other protein foods. I am the man, and I have been interested in your references to the teachings of Hlndhede. who seems to think we can get along with very little protein. I cat whole wheat bread and plenty of leafy vegetables, but suppose I get little protein out of them. I wondered whether it would be advisable for me to substitute a quart of skim milk a day for the meat I have Tieen accus tomed to eating. (C. F. B.) Answer. A quart of skim milk that is milk from which the cream has been removed contains about an ounce of protein, which is consider ably less than the minimum required for a day. You get considerable pro tein in whole wheat bread. If your diet includes peas and beans you will get sufficient protein. Instead of drinking more skim milk to get more protein, why not indulge in that very palatable article, cottage cheese, which is about one' fourth pure milk protein. Milk protein is one of the most valuable proteins for all require ments of the body. .
