WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY "13, T92J WASHINGTON, 15." C. Secretary Mellon has frilled to consider in his etttlmatea oP anticipated revenue the sum of approximately, $160,000,000 annually accruing as Interest on the British war debt, twice as much as is needed to pay the adjusted com pensation hill, according to John R. Quinn, national commander of the American- Legion. In mu'kliig this declaration, Com mander Qtlinn added that Secretary Mellon hatl? also failed to take into account lh0' estimated savings of $220,000,000 to $250,000,000 which economies of national administration will produce. The statements wore made at the all-day session of Legion's National Leglttlatlve committee, held at the hotel Washington when plans for a nation-wide demonstration by ex-service men were laid. "The secretary of the treasury is the greatest enemy of the ex-service men in this country," CommamluT Quinn told the delegates from forty eight states. "Here stands a great administrative official of the govern ment persistently lobbying to defeat a jispec-iflc measure of legislation a " measure which the majority of duly elected legislators repeatedly have de clined should be enacted Into law. : :He has ; '.consistently ultered the estimated ;iot . of meeting adjusted compensation, but even his biggest f.Htimatea t(:n be met out of the in terest on the iiritlsh war debt and the economies effected In administra tion. , , j There Is about $160,000,000 a year paid on the dibt and Mellon's latest cost estimate Is $476,000,000 for the first four years, an average of a lit- j tie less than $119,000,000 a year. It will uot cost that much, us Mellon un doubtedly knows, hut meeting him on his own ground, we have more than enough to pay the eost without in flicting hardships on any class of people, and without hindering tax re duction, it can be seen that taxes can be reduced,! 1 want them to h reduced und so does the legion. And ,M-lhn Is insulting our . intelligence when he says that there can he no tax reduction if the adjusted compen sation bill is paid."
