SOMETHING BIG See our announcement in the SUNDAY SUN CRATER LAKE AUTOMOTIVE CO. . Paige and Jewett Dealers "Where the truth is treated with respect" EXALTED RULER IT AT ELKS Well pickled, ollved, cheesed, beaned and coffeed, and surfeited with enjoy ment the five or six hundred members of the Elks lodge and their many guests went home at a late hour last night. It was the first time that most of the Elks and American legion men present had ever been pickled and they enjoyed the sensation. The lodge Bmoker, which immedi ately followed the past exalted rulers night observance for members of the order only, was a big Buccess. It was the lurgost crowd that was ever as sembled at a lodge smoker and the most successful smoker in years, which enjoyed the athletic bouts to the limit, after which they filled the inner man In the basement of the Elks temple. The past exalted rulers' affair was very Impressive, and the old gentle men who filled the various chair sta tions spoke their pieces with much eclat, as they Initiated a candidate into the order and lodge, thereby demon strating the fact that they were some rulers in their day. During tills ceremony the senile oc cupant filling the esteemed leading knight's position became bewildered pulled the wrong switch to produce the eastern Btar and thus momentarily bhut off the electric lights between Ashland, and Grants Pass. The man playing the esquire's position also en tered the dotage class with his demon stratlon of rapid calculation and count ing to time of the clock. He was thinking of seven-come-eleven, but pronounced it eleven back to nine, and then reversed quickly as the mysti cal hour was rapidly approaching. These startling breaks proved that there were other hams In the lodge room besides those cooking on the ranges downstairs for the teed. The following past exalted rulers filled the various stations: Exalted ruler, O. O. Alenderfer: es teemed leading knight, J. J. Buchter; esteemed loyal knight, W. H. Mc Gowan; esteemed 'lecturing knight, Qua Newbury; esquire, E. C. Jerome; inner guard, Leon B. Hasklns; chap lain, C. E. Gates; tiler, T. E. Daniels; treasurer, Geo, T. Collins; secretary, E. E. Kelly. :. . Before the lodge session closed first nominations were made for the com ing annual election, and a member of the lodge, who was recently married and has just returned with his bride, was put through a harrowing ordea) and sent home somewaht tatooed and subdued. It is expected the child's asallants will be In custody before night Hasklns for Health. The experiments from bptuilsnr which have been conducted In several universities at the expense ot tho Na tlonu 1 dinner's association huvo ah own that In ordinary vegetables a cook of at least G hours at a tompera tuie of 212 degrees In boiling water, is necessary to destroy tho most resis tant spores ot 13. botullniiH. At higher altitudes where water bolls at a much lower temperature, an apou bath cook must be much longer than this to accomplish the same results. . These results aro confirmed by the experiences of home canning. During tho last few years there have boen a number of outbreaks of botullHtn from home canned string beans. In the home the open bath process Is usually employe and It Is obvious that the same process is just as dan gerous In the canning plant as In tho home. Nearly all commercial canners process string beans under pressure. Obviously processing the string beans In the open bath would be as danger ous in commercial canning as In home canning. It has also been shown that 13. bot ulinus grows readily in beets and that the open hath process is therefore not safe with that product. One out break of botulism is ascribed to beets canned commercially by that process. In canning beets It Is Important to conserve tho coloring-matter as far as possible, but it is far more lm portunt to make tho process safo. A cook of 0 hours at U12 degrees which would ho noceHsary to destroy H. bot ulinus has lest sterilizing efficiency than n process of 20 minutes at 240 degrees In No. 2 cans. Tho color Is destroyed far less In processing at the higher temperatures been use of tho shorter period of the conk. This pro cess is used at the Mod ford cannery.
