ment of Aubrey CJ. Smith, superin
tendent of schools, but this afternoon
the. teachers were to hold a little ser
vice' and tell their pupils something of
the life of the lato President Wilson,
however, the high school and all but
the four lowest grades of the grade
schools will be dismissed anyway this
afternoon on account of examinations.

The city council meeting last night
was mostly devoted to transacting
routine business. The council received
a protest from - citizens living In the
vicinity of the corner of Welch and
Jackson streets, against nllowlng the
new States Glove factory, which is
being moved here from Denver, Colo.,
locating on a lot which was tentative
ly given this concern by the council
last woek, providing the neighborhood
didn't object. After briefly discuss
ing the protest It was decided that the
city will provide another location for
the factory, and the matter was left

A deal was closed in this city yes
terday in which 12,000,000 feet of
timber located on this side of the
Siskiyou mountains, near the railroad
station of Siskiyou, was transferred to
Arthur Cogens, of Dunsmulr, from
15. T. Merrill, well known timber land
owner and dealer, of Long Ueach,
California. Mr.'. Merrill has been in
Ashland for the past several days in
connection with the deal and informs
