BE FAIR FEATURE
Harness Taces will lie the big enter
tainment feature at tlio Juckson coun
ty fair according to H. O. Frohback
who lias just returned from a meet
ing of the North Pacific" Fnlr"anfRac-
Ing Association held at Seattle. The
fair at New Westminister, Canada, will
be the only fair held on tlio same dates
of the Jackson County Fair and as
they do not have races at New West
minister, the horsemen will be at Med-
ford, otherwise they will have to lay
tip that week.
No changes were made In the rac
ing rules. Instead of the horsemen
paying ten per cent entry fees which
was added to the purse, the new plan
la to charge three per cent entry fee
which will be rotnlned by the fair as
sociations. The Bernardo Exposition Shows with
seven rides and ten aide shows will be
nt the fair this year. It Is a twelve
car outfit and clean in every particu
lar. No girl shows will be permitted
by any of the fairs this year and each
fair reserves the right to close any
show on the grounds thnt it is distaste
ful to the management. A bond will
he furnished assuring uppearnnce and
another bond against auclilenU will be
given by the Hernnrde Shows com
pany. The dates for the Jackson County
Fair are September 10, 11, 12 and 1:1.

THIS TIME OF YEAR
The freaky spring liko weather
which has prevailed for days with its
several periods of brisk winds, which
are unusual for this section, alternate
sunshino and cloudiness and always
threatening rain, with but little of the
much needed wetness falling, continues
and rain is again the prediction for
Saturday. Just a trace of rain fell
several times today.
Such weather us has been prevailing
has shattered the predicting appara
tus of the old timers of tills section
and other amateur weather prophets.
They simply cannot understand why
n down Knr of rain has not followed
shortly after these wind outbursts, as
nearly always in the past.
Now tho old timers with their repu
tntions shattered as weather oracles

that they look for a big storm of some
kind to conio when this freak weather
spell breaks.
Meantime unless there Is a steady
downpour of rain In the valley, and
much more snow in the mountains
within the next l'ew months, the pres
ent year will go down In the records

the pnHt 111 years tlio rainfall here
abouts has been about 1G Inches, and
up to date the rainfall siuco lust Sep
tember Is now five or six inches short.
Only about a half Inch fell during this
last month, whereas the average Jan
uary rainfall of recent years has been
about one and one half Inches.
Not only that hut there has been n
shortuge of snowfall In the hills and
mountains, which If It continues, bodes
111 to Irrigation in the valley next sum
mer. In the Dead Indian section, accord
ing to reports which reached bore yes
terday, there are at present only eight
Inches of snow nt the dlvido, in com
parison with three or mora feet of
snow In rocont years.
This snow shortage is also plainly
evident In the llutte Fulls district
whero homesteaders are now nble to
walk out to their homesteads, even
within four miles of Mt. Pitt, whereas
In previous years at this time these
homesteads could not be reached be
cause of tho great depth of snow.

tion of petroleum In the United
States broke ail records In 1923, incom
plete figures Indicating an output of
735,000,0110 barrels, according to gov
ernment survoy statistics made public
today. This is an Increase of 30 per
conl over 11122 and nearly 40,000,000
barrels mora than the total world pro
duction in 11120. In addition to the
htrgo domestic yield Imports reachod
82.000,000 barrels.

Here arc a few little known histor
ical facts about the county courthouse,
and the city of Jacksonville.
The courthouse cost (42,500 and
whefi the contractor got through he
was suffering from acute pains in the
pocketbook. The contractor who built
the foundation, sufficiently stout to
hold up the rock of Gibraltar, had fin
ished the job, he was In such financial
shape, that residents of Jacksonville
and the county, gave him a benefit
dance. It was quite a party, say the
pioneers who participated.
According to County Judge Gardner,
tho buildings In Jacksonville are a
source of delight to architects, and
every house holds some bit of work
manship, long out of style. More
architecture of the period before the
Civil War, is still Intact in Jackson
ville, than in any oilier town In the
land, Is the claim.
The fancy pulnting noticeable on
the door panels, window sills, and ta
bles of the courthouse, was all the
rage when the courthouse was built.
It Is of a wavy nature, the waves being
produced with a fine tooth comb pulled
through the paint, whilo it was wot.
The grain in the wood wus produced
by rubbing a peeled potato, after the
wood had been painted with linseed
oil, and turpentine. The artisans of
tho old days had a few tricks.

A most interesting silk exposition
in bolng featured this week ut Mann's
big department store. Through the
courtesy of Marshall Field & Com
pany, tho manufacturers and distribu
tors of "Silks Beau Monde," a number
of specimens brought from Japan have
been secured which show the process
of silk making. This display will be
most educational insofar as it will
show the process used In converting
the fibre of the silk worms' cocon Into
a delicate and beautiful fabric.
This silk exposition will hold forth
nt Mann's store until Saturday night
and tho! public is cordially invited to
see It.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 Woodrow
Wilson has been indisposed for two
days, it became known last night, hut
Dr. Sterling Muffin, who was summon
ed In the absence from the city of Dr.
Cnry T. Grayson, doclnred he "did not
consider the former president's illness
serious."
"Tlio illness for which I was called
In," Dr. Iluffln added, "had nothing
to do with the former gruve illness of
Mr. Wilson."
Dr. Grayson, who has attonded Mr.
Wilson during and since his adminis
tration is on a hunting trip in North
Carolina and was not expected to re
turn to Washington until today.
