Well, t.Uo democratic mulo in apparently enjoying a somewhat sim ilar experience. lie put his foot into what everyone supposed was a dry hole, and in the process of extricating himself, struck oil. It started as a pumping proposition. But when one Archie Roose velt took a hiuul, bingo, bango, there wns a gusher! No one can blame William Jennings Bryan for putting on his well-known record, concerning big business and tho down-trodden common people, and executing a fan-dango on his Florida front porch. There are, however, one or two flies in the petroleum. One is Mr. Doheny, who not only gave a speech at the last Democratic convention in San Francisco, but lubricated the wheels of the Cox machine with several hundred thousand oil-dollars. Mr. Doheny it seems, gave that $100,000 cheek to ex-Secretary Fall. The democrats will have hard work in greasing tho skids for tho elephant and not getting a few splashes on tho financial angel of tho democratic donkey. How ever, as politics go, the feat may perhaps be accomplished. The other fly is President Coolidge, Although heir of the Harding administration, President Coolidge has lost no time in 'getting after', the alleged malefactors. Not a moment has he wasted since the gusher was announced. His strategy since then has been flawless. This second fly indeed, may be fatal to democratic hopes. It looks that way at tho present writing. But whether or not, what an in teresting situation I The only political parallel is to go back to Tal't and-the Ballinger controversy. Tho Stomach Lies Low For an organ that stands up so nobly under tho hardest abuno and universal slander, the stomach evinces a strungo disposition to slink away fro in thu place where it really ought to be. Ono particu tice, yet doing its larly fine physical specimen with the work - honestly and 'strongest obdominal muscles took set- well We have a divi sion of professional opinion upon the status of tho stomach now. One school of which I was an adherent when I thought I know more than everybody knows, I know now, figuratively shuls Its eyes, clamps its jaws and asserts that any stomach which sags down to or below tho brim of tho pelvis Is guilty of ptosis and the owner of that stomach must not only pre sent a Hwell assortment of symptoms but undergo a lot of physical, dietary. mechanical, medicinal, hygienic and oven surgical treatment for what alls him, for he's a gone gooso unless we can somehow take a tuck in his stom ach. The other school, with which I am now traveling, I being as you might say nothing if not agile, takes a calm, philosophical view of these seemingly suspicious lapses or slumps of the stomach which, adherents of the new school gently but firmly maintain, aro perfectly normal for the majority of persons. Hence one need not insist that there is anything tho matter or any press- ing need for treatment just because tno x-ray picture reveals that the stomach Is in Texas instead of in Michigan. urs. Moody, R. O. Van Nuys, It. G., this? (R. w.) and Chamberlain, AV. E., of California Answer. Yes, tho probably no sur have studied by means of fluoroscopic goon would attempt to romovo tho and roentgenograph examinations tno position of tho stomach in 600 healthy young adults, an equal num ber of men and women. They aro the experts who testify that In 80 per cent of these healthy men and women tho stomach lies ns low as the pelvis, and thoy further testify that tho low or sagging colony lying in the true pelvis, Is nlso perfectly normal and no warrant In itself for any symptoms. Indeed these observers conclude that tho use of tho term gastroptosis tor ataxia there is no good evidence (sagging of tho stomach) and colop- , that the patient has ever had syphilis; tosis (sagging of the colon) is seldom ; no doubt other infections or toxins bo justifled. In the editorial of tho 28th inst., are expressions of attitudo toward tho recent action of tho county court in tho matter of tho proposed pavemont of tho liuch-Med-ford road that seem to me to bo un fortunately out of harmony with tho facts and with tho past attitudo of the paper on tho subject of good roads. I notico that tho editor is "surprised at tho sudden action of tho county court," etc. If I am not misinformed bonds wero votod by tho peoplo- of Jackson county about four years ago and the application specified for the uso of tho proceeds of tho issuo. A certain sum was to bo used on the Crater Iako highway; another portion for tho Klamath Falls road and $100, 000 to bo used on the Kuch road. $l!0,000 of that $100,000 I understand has been used in making a road bed on this line and the remainder of $S0, 000 has not been sold and it is that which tho county court proposes to' uso as directed by tho tax payers at tho election four years ago, while tho rest of that bond authorization was promptly made available and applied as directed. Can It bo said that tho action of tho county court is "pre cipitate" after a. delay of four years? You declare this Medford-Ilueh pro ject to bo "tho most Important road improvement since tho construction of the Pacific highway" and yet se verely criticise tho county court with undue "haste." All tho other appli cations of that bond Issue wero pushed with approved speed and not a word of criticism and no suggestion that this "most important road improve ment since the construction of the Pa-, ctfic highway" was held in abeyance. You say, "Why such haste? The first intimation most of the people of the county had of such highway, was only a few days before the county court met, when politics were being circulated." This matter. was sub mitted to and approved by the people of the county four years ago. Do you think they had forgotten it? Was it necessary to submit it again? 1 am not awaro that the Tribune has ever expressed any objection when county funds were to bo used on tho Crater lake highway, or some other pet im provement. H has been suggested by a Tribune correspondent a few days ago. that this money be used on the Crater Lake road. Is that tho way by which its use could be made to relieve the "tax payers"? You say. QUESTIONS AXD ANSWERS Mora Fruit in JHct Is there any ono food or emulsion or medicine that can bo given to a pros pective mother and threo small chil dren whose main diet, in a boarding house, is white bread,, meat, potatoes, pio, tea and coffoe? Something to off set tho deficiency? (W. J. M.) Answer. Plenty of frosh fruit, and pure fresh milk for all hands every day will balance the diet all right. Orange juice, apples, apple sauce, or any other freah fruit, or for tho young children fruit juices or the stewed pulp, would be good medicine. Well, suppose they did; tho present howl looks as though they saw tho necessity of doing it Jhat way, and perhaps copied from the practices of another bunch that has often succeeded by such methods. So far as the movers In this matter know such methods have not been patented. Hut frankly; why is there such objection to the "most impor tant highway improvement since the construction of tho Pacific highway"? C. 13. WATSON. Ashland, Oregon, January 20, li)2(. Ed. Note. The people did not, as Judge Watson intimates, vote bonds for the paving of tho Medford-Uuch road; nor have tho proceeds of the bonds been used for paving of any other roads. Tho Mail Tribune's ob jection was, and Is. objection to upending tho tax payers' money for a pavement in a section where tho traf fic does not warrant a pavement. The Mail 'tribune explicitly stated, that any halancPluc tho Medford-Uuch section, should be devoted to improv ing and extending tho gravel-macadam roads and not bo used for a pave ment, the cost and nature of which, not its necessity makes It the most important highway improvement since tho construction of the Pacific highway. No Pavement Voted. To tho Editor: When did the people of Jackson county vote bonds to pave the Med ford to Iluch road exclusive of any other road? Weren't other roads to be included in this Improvement? Practically everyone in Jackson coun ty not benefitted by this road is op posed to it. When tho court decides to put aW pavement on tho best graveled roai in the county, there is something de cidedly wrong somewhere. . Yours Truly. ' ' ' ' - "J. V.
