ing, but I don't mind, for here I can
avail myself of the

competency in the past and have only
recently learned what competency Is
in a physician. I believe. Dr. Brady,
that you can do more for people's
health by getting into their heads
what constitutes a competent physic
ian and how to distinguish him among
the incompetents in the healing pro
fession than anything else.
'I am going to suggest this method
of recognizing a competent physician,
the method having in view the fact
that a great number of patients have
been thoroughly hwd by incompetents
nnd are consequently doctor shy to a
legrec, and further that they do not
have tho facilities for ascertaining a
physician's qualifications which phy
sicians havo In respect to each other.
'Kirst, the man must be a gradu
ate of a certain grade or class of
school; you should publish a list of
tho medical schools which are in the
grade A class. Second, In general, he
should havo been graduated within
ho Inst 20 years. 1 suggest this re
striction to insuro a modern training
medicine. Of course, there are
many perfectly competent physician
who were grndtiated more than 20
years ago and who have kept' abreast
of the progress of. medical science by,
ntlnulng their . studies, by taking
active part in thq, medical society af-.
fairs in their communities and by:
honest, scientific study of their own
ases In practice, liut you arc aware
that the average patient needs some
means to assuro himself that his phy-1
slclan is up to date and Is readily de-
elved in this matter by charlatans.
And because so. ninny patients aro
doctor shy from thp. money standpoint
I'd suggest that the competent phy
sician should make, no charge for his
services from the moment ho finds a
case Y-cquires l"g study nr expensive
treatment until .success has been
achieved, and that ho so inform the
patient at the outset. Although many
patients aro so sold on physicians or
at least on certain physicians that I
they aro quite willing to go ahead
with any kind of'ijltpectimt treatment
or undergo .any wmouht of groping
special examination on the usual :
basis. Put1 my 'suggestion Is rather
for those who think the doctor wants
the operation principally for what it
will add to his coffers and not for tho
benefit of his patient, and for such, I
submit, it Is most nocossary to re
establish confidence in the Integrity of

for Medford to grow all the cities
within a radiouB of fifty miles must
grow, to consumo what is manufac
tured in Medford. Take Now York or
Boston for example, they nro both
surrounded by largo cities. If you kill
your neighbor town you hurt your
own town.
A paved road from Medford to
Ruch will benefit tho wholo county.
It will help to reduce tho taxes as a
road that is traveled as much as the
road from Medford to Ruch cannot
bo kept in shape without constant ex
pense. Tho work that was dono on
this road last year is only a repetition
of the work that was dono a few years
previous and iUwould navo to be re
pented every few years If the county
court had not wisely deelded to pave.
Out of sixty-four business men of
Medford but six refused to sign my
petition. Two assigned as their rea
son for refusing that they wanted the
county seat moved. Let us say that
many counties in this country have
six or more large cities but only one
has a court house. The pioneers made
Jacksonville the county seat. Let us
respect and honor them by leaving
tho court house at . Jacksonville. 1
would suggest that the lawyers who
want to be close to the court house
build nice homes at Jacksonville and
as Jacksonville growa so will Medford
and the whole valley grow. Let us
boost for the whole county.
