The policy of the .Secretary of the Treasury then, was not essentially different from the policy of Secretary Mellon today. , If a Democratic administration should be installed tomorrow :j doubtful if the average citizen would be able to detect any great change either in his condition, or the administration of, national af fairs. Political patronage would be in different hands, various offices would be held by men with different names, there would undoubt edly lie some sharp losses on Wall Street, and a few jolts in highly organized business, but these shocks would soon be absorbed, and the affairs of the country would go on very much as before. As far as political essentials are concerned the differences between ilie two major parties in this country today, are the differences be tween Tweedle Dee and Tweeille Diim. Of course partisans on nei ther side would accept this diagnosis, for a national campaign is about to begin. Hut the diagnosis is correct nevertheless. Any doctor who prescribes it will tell you that. And it is true. It produces justifiable nausea in most cases; it produces many of the most obstinate cases of constipation in children; it produces a feeling f disgust for medicine and doctors that carry the poor victims on to extravagant retaliation against the profession later In life; it pro duces a dread of the doctor. Castor oil. like a promissory note, is binding in effect. That is why it Is used in the treatment of diarrhoea. Most all cathartics have a secondary binding effect, but castor oil particularly. It Is unnecessary and unkind to in flict a dose of castor oil on a child when another physic will do as well. There ore plenty to choose from. No need of selecting the crudest. Medi cine may be good even if It Isn't horrible. Good substitutes for castor oil are the aromatic syrup of rhubarb U. S. H.) in the same doses for the same purposes children call this the candy medicine; milk of magnesia, liquid petrolatum, aromatic fluid extract of casenra. liquid citrate of magnesia, sena leaves chopped up with figs, and phenophthalein tables or lozenges. Parents should consider long and' seriously before administering the first dose of castor oil to a baby. It is usually an introduction to an end less difficulty with indigestion and ! cosliveness.
