"(Jet the money while the getting is good, and the public he damned!" That ruthless slogan of the pioneer pirates of organized capital, in the days of Commodore Vanderbilt and Jay Gould, has been adopted by too many leaders of organized labor, too many for the good of the country, and too many for the good of organized labor. What if the bahies in large cities are deprived of milk and the f sinners crops rot in the fields. "Strike when the iron is hot and the public need is greatest;" is and has been the rule of the railroad brotherhood, and the plan has been so successful the idea is spreading throughout the ranks. Hut while such tactics may win for a time, they will fail in the end just as the Vanderbilt-Gould code was ultimately crushed by an outraged public opinion. .Just as capital has a right to organize, so has labor that right. Hut when the power inherent in such organization is unjustly used, when it encroaches upon public welfare, when it is employed to se cure not rights but privileges; then the issue becomes one between autocracy and democracy, between the privileges of the few and the rights of the majority, and the priveleges of the few must and will go down. TUNGSMITII comes along, to gossip for an hour; her wind is good, her head is wrong her disposition sour. Sho gathers up the evil news throughout, our drowsy town, and then, as one would bootleg booze, she spreads it up and down. She journeys to my cottage door and camps upon the sill, and there relates, an hour or more, dire chronicles of ill. It seems that Jimpson beats his wife, though vainly he pretends to lead a clean and godly life, with noble aims and ends. The Widow Heeswax lost some hens, and there are clews to show that Hunkstcr burg larized her pens and laid her chickens low. The Gold Hriek store was lately burned and an insurance dick has whispered that the owner turned a little arson trick. So Mrs. Tungsmith jogs ahead with talcs of crime and vice; and all the caustic things she's said with me cut little ice. I gravely watch her shriveled jaws, and think of Maehcth's crones, and muter sundry hems and haws in non-committal tones. I know that when she goes away she'll roast mo like tho rest; she'll claim I stole a neighbor's hay or robbed a rooster's nest. I cannot make the gossip quit, she'll slander till she's hoarse; but she can't lead me to admit that I indorse her course. If you can suggest any way to break him of this terrible habit you will win the grutitude of us all. (M. M. M.) Answer: If the drunkard sincerely desires to be rid of his craving it can be done by ordinary medical treat ment which any competent physician can give anywhere. The method which I have seen convert some worthless men into good industrious citizens is the one given to the medical profes sion about fifteen years ago by Dr. Alexander Lambert. Any physician may find a good description of it in Forchheimer's "Thernpeusis of Inter nal Diseases," Vol. 11, page 693, or Lambert's own description of the method In the Journal of the Amer ican Medical Association, Sept. !:. 1909, and Feb. 9, 1910.
